Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was selected to play in the NBA All-Star Game for a record of 19 times.
The National Basketball Association (NBA) All-Star Game is an annual exhibition basketball game played between the Eastern-Conference and the Western-Conference All-Stars. It is the main event of the NBA All-Star Weekend. Twelve players—five starters and seven reserve—from each conference are chosen from a pool of 120 players—60 players from each conference with 24 guard, 24 forward and 12 center—listed on the ballots by a panel of sport writers and broadcasters. The starters are chosen in two ways. The first is through electronic ballots cast daily by fans on NBA.com or mobile phones. The other is through paper ballots cast by fans at NBA arenas and some T-Mobile retail stores. The leading vote recipients at each position start the game. The reserves are chosen by voting among the head coaches of each team's particular conference. Coaches are not allowed to vote for their own players, and can select two guards, two forwards, one center and two players regardless of positions. If a player is unable to participate due to injury, the NBA commissioner will select a replacement. The 1999 All-Star Game was cancelled due to the league's lockout.

The following is a list of NBA All-Stars, players who have been selected for the NBA All-Star Game at least once in their career. Note that the number indicates the player's number of selections—not the number of games played. For instance, Michael Jordan was named to the All-Star Game roster 14 times, but missed the 1986 game due to injury. As of the 2009 All-Star Game, 365 players have been selected for an All-Star Game roster at least once.

Hall of Famermarker Kareem Abdul-Jabbar holds the record for most All-Star Game selections and most All-Star Games played. He was selected 19 times and played in 18 All-Star games. Shaquille O'Neal holds the record for most All-Star Game selections among active players, with 15 selections. Jerry West has the most consecutive selections with 14. O'Neal and Karl Malone were also selected 14 consecutive times if the lockout-cancelled 1999 game is excluded, while Bob Cousy and John Havlicek are tied for the most consecutive games actually played, both appearing in 13 straight All-Star Games. The longest active All-Star streak is held by Kevin Garnett, who has been selected for 12 straight All-Star Games (excluding the cancelled 1999 game). Four players (Cedric Ceballos, Steve Johnson, Jameer Nelson and Theo Ratliff) share the distinction of being named to an All-Star Game roster, but never actually played in the game due to injury.

Notes and references

Notes
  • Before the 1971–72 season, Lew Alcindor converted to Islam and changed his name to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. He missed the 1973 All-Star Game due to personal reasons.
  • When Hakeem Olajuwon arrived in the United States, the University of Houston incorrectly spelled his first name "Akeem". Olajuwon used that spelling until March 9, 1991, when he announced that he would add an H.
  • This column does not include American Basketball Association (ABA) All-Star Game selections.
