Airlines often seem to be remembered by their worst accidents and incidents. In that sense this list presents a good overview. While all the accidents and incidents in this list are noteworthy, not all involve fatalities.

If the aircraft crashed on land, it will be listed under a continent and a country. If the aircraft crashed on a body of water, it will be listed under that body of water.

Africa

Algeria

• Air Algerie Flight 6289 crashed after takeoff from Tamanrasset, Algeria on , killing 102 people aboard. A single passenger survived the crash
• Air France Flight 8969 was hijack after takeoff from Algiers and flown to France on , where the French Gendarmerie stormed the plane and killed the four terrorists. Three passengers also died during the incident.

Angola

• N844AA was a Boeing 727 leased to TAAG Angola Airlines that was stolen from Quatro de Fevereiro Airport in Luanda on . The aircraft disappeared after takeoff, and a mechanic confirmed to be onboard has not been heard from since.
• A Trans Service Airlift Lockheed L-188 crashed on shortly after takeoff from Jamba Airport, killing 141 passengers and crew. The aircraft had been filled with 40 people beyond specifications. One crewmember and two passengers survived.

Benin

• UTA Flight 141 crashed on after failing to takeoff from Cotonou Airport. 151 of 163 people aboard died.

Canary Islands, Spain

• KLM Flight 4805 and Pan Am Flight 1736 crashed during takeoff from Tenerife in the Canary Islands on in what has become known as the Tenerife disaster. The ground collision was caused by a number of factors, including weather conditions, pilot error, and technical limitations. A total of 583 people aboard both aircraft perished. 61 people (54 passengers, 7 crew) aboard Pan Am Flight 1736 survived.

• Dan-Air Flight 1008 crashed into a mountain on Tenerife near Los Rodeos due to pilot error on . All 146 people aboard were killed. The accident was the greatest loss of life on a British-registered aircraft.

Cameroon

• Caledonian Airways Flight 153 crashed into a swamp shortly after takeoff from Douala International Airport on , killing all 111 aboard. The cause was never determined.
• Kenya Airways Flight 507 crashed shortly after takeoff from Douala International Airport on , killing all 114 aboard. The accident is currently under investigation

Chad

• Air West Flight 612 was hijacked shortly after takeoff from Khartoum, Sudan and flown to N'Djamena, Chad on . There were no casualties, and the hijacker gave himself up upon reaching Chad.

Comoros

• Ethiopian Airlines Flight 961 - see 'Indian Ocean.
• Yemenia Flight 626 - see 'Indian Ocean.

Côte d'Ivoire

• Kenya Airways Flight 431 crashed shortly after takeoff from Abidjan on . Ten passengers survived. Of the 169 fatalities, 146 bodies were recovered, and 103 of those bodies were identified.
• Varig Flight 797 crashed into the jungle near Abidjan after engine failure on . 50 people perished; a single passenger survived.

Democratic Republic of the Congo

• A L-410 aircraft operated by Free Airlines crashed in a swamp shortly after takeoff from Kamina Airport on . The plane was overloaded, carrying 21 passengers and crew rather than the 17 maximum specified. One person perished, and four others were badly injured.
• An Antonov An-26 operated by Africa One crashed and burned shortly after takeoff from Kinshasa on . 51 people perished, including 31 on the ground. One, possibly two, passengers survived. The cause of the crash is under investigation.
• In the 1996 Air Africa crash, an Antonov An-32 operated by Air Africa failed to takeoff and overran the runway at N'Dolo Airport and crashed into a crowded street market on . The aircraft was operating illegally. At least two passengers perished, along with an estimated 350 on the ground. An estimated 500 others were injured. Both pilots were charged and convicted of 225 counts of manslaughter and served two-year sentences.
• Hewa Bora Airways Flight 122 crashed into a residential and market area of Goma on after its engines failed during takeoff. 3 passengers and 37 people on the ground perished; 83 passengers and 8 crew survived. Additionally 111 injuries were reported, 40 of whom were passengers.

Egypt

• Pan Am Flight 93 was hijacked as a part of the Dawson's Field hijackings on and flown to Beirut and then to Cairo. The aircraft was blown up by the hijackers seconds after the passengers were deplaned.
• Flash Airlines Flight 604 crashed into the Red Sea shortly after takeoff from Sharm el-Sheikh International Airport on . All 148 aboard perished. The findings of the crash investigation are controversial, with accident investigators from the different countries involved not agreeing on the cause.
• Libyan Arab Airlines Flight 114 was shot down by Israeli fighter jets on after it entered Israeli airspace and its pilots ignored instructions from the fighter pilots. 108 aboard perished; the five survivors included the copilot.
• PIA Flight 705 crashed while attempting to land at Cairo International Airport on when the pilot descended too quickly. 5 passengers survived; the other 119 people aboard died.
• TWA Flight 903 crashed during a forced emergency landing in the desert near Cairo after an engine caught fire and separated from the aircraft midflight on . All 55 aboard were killed.

Kenya

• Lufthansa Flight 540 crashed and caught fire shortly after takeoff from Kenyatta International Airport on . The cause was determined to be negligence of the flight crew as well as design flaws. 59 people were killed; 98 survived. This was the first crash involving a Boeing 747.

Liberia

• Pan Am Flight 151 crashed into a hill in Bong County on due to pilot error. All 40 on board are killed.

Niger

• UTA Flight 772, operated by the French airline Union des Transports Aériens, was destroyed by Libyan terrorists over the Sahara Desert on . All 156 passengers and 14 crew members died, including the wife of the American ambassador to Chad.

Nigeria

• ADC Airlines Flight 53 crashed into a corn field on shortly after take off from Abuja. 97 people, including one on the ground, perished; nine people survived. The exact cause of the crash is disputed.
• Bellview Airlines Flight 210 crashed shortly after takeoff from Lagos on , killing all 117 people aboard. The cause of the crash is under investigation, though a lightning strike is considered to be the most likely explanation.
• EAS Airlines Flight 4226 crashed in a residential section of the city of Kano on due to pilot error. 75 people aboard the aircraft, as well as 73 people on the ground, died in the crash and ensuing fire. 5 passengers survived with injuries. The crash was the highest death toll in an accident invovling a BAC 1-11.
• Sosoliso Airlines Flight 1145 crash landed on the runway at Port Harcourt International Airport on . 108 people onboard, including 61 secondary school students, perished in the impact and fire. Two passengers survived. The cause of the crash is believed to be weather related, though this has not been confirmed by authorities.

Rwanda

• RwandAir Flight 205 crashed into a building after an emergency landing in Kigali on , killing one passenger. The accident is currently under investigation.

South Africa

• South African Airways Flight 406 crashed into the Eastern Cape on after the pilot suffered a fatal heart attack while on approach to East London, South Africa. All 25 aboard were killed.

Sudan

• Sudan Airways Flight 109 crashed, broke apart, and caught fire upon landing at Khartoum on . The cause of the accident is still under investigation. 30 people are confirmed dead, and 6 are missing.
• Sudan Airways Flight 139 crashed in Port Sudan on killing all 117 aboard. The flight crew was not able to see the runway in the low visibility and crashed when attempting a missed approach.
• Sudan Airways Flight 111 was hijacked on . The hijacker demanded to be flown to South Africa, but agreed to stop to refuel in Khartoum, where he was arrested.

Togo

• 1974 Togo plane crash - a plane carrying several Togolese politicians crashed near Sarakawa. President Gnassingbé Eyadéma was the sole survivor.

Antarctica

• Air New Zealand Flight 901 crashed into the side of Mount Erebus, Antarctica on for various reasons including pilot error, maintenance crew error, and whiteout conditions. All 257 aboard perished.

Asia

Afghanistan

• Kam Air Flight 904 crashed in the Pamir mountains during a snow storm on . All 104 people onboard were killed, and the cause of the crash remains under investigation and undetermined.

Armenia

• Belavia Flight 1834 crashed during takeoff from Yerevan's Zvartnots International Airport on after suffering mechanical failure due to icing. There were no casualties.

Bahrain

• Gulf Air Flight 072 (23 August 2000) - Pilot error and an apparent engine fire caused the plane to come down in the Persian Gulf off the coast of Bahrain

People's Republic of China

Mainland China

• Air China Flight 129 - Crashed into terrain in low visibility.
• China Northern Flight 6136 - Fire on board caused loss of control and crashed into the sea.
• China Eastern Flight 5210 - Crashed shortly after take off.
• 1990 People's Republic of China airliner collision (Xiamen Airlines Flight 8301, a China Southwest Airlines 707, and a China Southern Airlines 757) - Hijacking of Xiamen Airlines 737, sideswiping of 707, crashing of aircraft into 757.
• China Northwest Airlines Flight 2303 - Broke up in mid-air and crashed near Xian. It is the deadliest airplane crash ever to occur in China.

Hong Kong SAR

• China Airlines Flight 605 overran the runway at Kai Tak International Airport on . The pilot failed to initiate a mandatory missed approach procedure after observing severe airspeed fluctuations. Nobody on board was injured in the incident.
• China Airlines Flight 642 crashed while attempting to land at Hong Kong International Airport on during a typhoon. The aircraft flipped and caught fire, killing three on board. 312 survived.

Georgia

• Transair Georgian Airline Crash (22 September) - Shot down as it was trying to takeoff from Sukhumi

Guam (United States)

India

• Air India Flight 403 crashed on at Sahar International Airport in Bombay due to heavy weather. 2 crew members and 15 passengers died; 94 survived.
• Air India Flight 855 crashed off the coast of Bandra, Bombay (now Mumbai) on when the captain became spatially disoriented after the failure of one of the flight instruments in the cockpit. All 213 aboard perished.
• Alitalia Flight 771 crashed into a hill northeast of Mumbai while on approach on . The accident was attributed to navigation error. All 94 aboard perished.
• Alliance Air Flight 7412 crashed in a residential estate of Patna on after the pilot lost control of the aircraft and stalled. 55 people aboard perished, along with 5 on the ground.
• In the 1996 Charkhi Dadri mid-air collision, Saudia Arabian Airlines Flight 763 collided in mid-air with Kazakhstan Airlines Flight 1907 on . The cause was determined to be pilot error by the Kazakhstan Airlines pilot. All 349 people on board both flights were killed, making it the deadliest mid-air collision in history.
• Indian Airlines Flight 113 crashed on its final approach to Ahmedabad airport due to pilot error on . 130 died.
• Indian Airlines Flight 257 crashed on descent into Imphal due to pilot error on , killing all 69 occupants.
• Indian Airlines Flight 427 was hijacked by a single individual on . The hijacker demanded passage to Afghanistan, but was denied overflight permission by Pakistani authorities and the pilot diverted to Amritsar. The hijacker was killed after security forces stormed the aircraft.
• Indian Airlines Flight 491 crashed into a truck at the end of the runway while taking off from Aurangabad, Maharashtra on . The cause was both pilot error and the failure of the aviation administration to control highway traffic. 55 people were killed.
• Indian Airlines Flight 605 crashed on its final approach to Bangalore airport on , killing 92 people. The cause was pilot error.
• Indian Airlines Flight 814 was hijacked by Pakistani terrorists on while in Indian airspace. The aircraft was flown to Kandahar, Afghanistan. 1 passenger was killed by the hijackers; the other 192 aboard survived.
• Korean Air Flight 858 - see 'Andaman Sea.

• Garuda Indonesia Domestic Flight - 1979 - Hit a volcano on approach to Medan Airport
• Garuda Indonesia Domestic Flight - 1982 - Runway overrun at Tanjung Karang-Branti Airport in bad weather.
• Silkair Flight 185 - 1997 - Crashed into the Musi River near Palembang, Sumatra
• Garuda Indonesia Flight 152 - 1997 - Crashed 25 km south of Medan killing 234 passengers and crew in 1997
• Mandala Airlines Flight 091 - 2005 - Crashed into a neighborhood shortly after takeoff from Medan, Sumatra

Iran

• 21 January 1980 - Iran Air Boeing 727-86; near Tehran, Iran. The aircraft hit high ground in a snowstorm during the approach to land. All eight crew members and 120 passengers were killed.
• 3 July 1988 - An Iranian passenger jet IR655 (Iran Air Flight 655) carrying 290 passengers is shot down over the Persian Gulf by the U.S. Navy guided missile cruiser USS Vincennes killing all aboard including 66 children.
• 1 September 2006 - An Iranian passenger jet Tu-154 (Iran Air Flight 945) carrying 148 passengers crashes in Mashad, Iran killing 29 people.
• 15 July 2009 - 168 killed in plane crash at 75 miles northwest of Tehran

Japan

• All Nippon Airways Flight 61 - Hijacked and taken back over Tokyo, Japan
• BOAC Flight 911 - In flight structural failure due to clear-air turbulence near Mount Fuji, Japan
• Canadian Pacific Airlines Flight 402 - Crashed on landing at Tokyo International Airport in fog.
• Japan Airlines Flight 123 - Crashed into Mount Osutaka, Japan
• Japan Airlines Flight 907 and Japan Airlines Flight 958 - Nearly collided near Yaizu, Japan
• China Airlines Flight 120 - Caught fire and exploded on Naha Airport, Okinawa, Japan

• Malaysia Airlines Flight 653 -Hijacked en route from Penang to Kuala Lumpur.
• 1976 Sabah plane crash (Double Six Tragedy) - Private flight crashed killing state ministers aboard.

Nepal

• Thai Airways International Flight 311 - Crashed north of Kathmandu, 111 killed.
• Pakistan International Airlines Flight 268 - Crashed near Kathmandu, 167 killed.

Pakistan

• Pan Am Flight 73 - Hijacked in Karachi, Pakistan.
• PIA Flight 688 - Crashed after take-off.

Saudi Arabia

• Middle East Airlines Flight 438 - Disintegrated in flight from an explosive detonation.
• Iraqi Airways Hijacking - Hijacked on the way from Baghdad to Amman, later crashed after a grenade exploded.
• Saudia Flight 163 - Caught fire as it took off on a flight from Riyadh to Jeddah.
• Nigeria Airways Flight 2120 (Jeddah, 1991) – Caught fire on take off due to underinflated tyre.

Singapore

• A BOAC Lockheed Constellation, "Belfast", crashed on landing at the Kallang Airport in 1954
• Singapore Airlines Flight 117 - Hijacked en route from Kuala Lumpur to Singapore.

Sri Lanka

• A Martinair DC-8 Series 55F hits Seven Virginsmountain range in Maskeliya, 4 December 1974 - 191 killed.
• Icelandic Airlines Icelandic Airlines Flight LL 001, a Douglas DC-8 on a charter flight, crashed into a coconut plantation while on approach to Katunayake, Sri Lanka for a refueling stop. Seventy-eight survived, but 184 were killed. (15 November 1978).

Republic of China (Taiwan)

• China Airlines Flight 676 - Crashed into a road upon approach to the airport, killing all passengers and crew of the aircraft and 6 persons on the ground
• Singapore Airlines Flight 006 - Crashed upon takeoff at Chiang Kai-shek International Airport near Taipei, Taiwan

Thailand

• Lauda Air Flight 004 - 26 May 1991 - Crashed into a jungle near Suphan Buri and Ban Nong Rong after an in-flight breakup
• Thai Airways Flight 261 - 11 December 1998 - Stalled and crashed into a paddy field on approach to Surat Thani Airport amid heavy rains and poor visibility
• One-Two-GO Airlines Flight 269 - 16 September 2007 - Crashed landed in wind shear and strong winds at Phuket International Airport
• Bangkok Airways Flight 266 - 4 August 2009 - Overran the runway on landing and crashed into a disused control tower at Koh Samui Airport

United Arab Emirates

• Gulf Air Flight 771 - Bombed, then crashed into a desert in the United Arab Emirates

South China Sea

• Qantas Flight 30 - 25 July 2008, Mid-air decompression after departure from Hong Kong, landed safely in Manila; no injuries

• Air Vietnam Flight 706 - Hijacked, then crashed after a missed approach at Phan Rang.
• Indian Airlines Flight 814 - Hijacked on the way to India, and flown to India, Pakistan, the UAE, and Afghanistan before the passengers are released 1 died.

Atlantic Ocean

• American Airlines Flight 63 - Attempted bombing over Atlantic Ocean, terrorist is restrained and sedated
• BOAC Flight 777 was shot down by Nazi fighter planes in the Bay of Biscay on . All 17 aboard perished, including actor Leslie Howard.
• Egyptair Flight 990 - Crashed off the coast of Nantucket
• Kenya Airways Flight 431 - Crashed into the Atlantic shortly after take-off from Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire, killing 169
• KLM Flight 607-E crashed west of Shannon, Ireland on . The most likely cause was catastrophic mechanical failure, though the cause is officially undetermined. All 99 aboard perished.
• Swissair Flight 111 - Crashed off the coast of Nova Scotia
• TWA Flight 800 - Crashed off the coast of East Moriches, New York
• Air India Flight 182 - was bombed over the ocean west of Ireland
• Air France Flight 447 - Crashed into the sea during a tropical storm (under investiagtion).

Black Sea

• Siberia Airlines Flight 1812 - Shot down by a missile on 4 October 2001
• Transair Georgian Airline Crash (21 September) - Shot down by a missile upon landing.
• Erevan-Sochi -2 May 2006

Caribbean Sea

• Birgenair Flight 301 - crashed in the sea, near the Dominican Republic; all 189 passengers and crew killed
• Cubana Flight 455 - bombed, then crashed off Barbados
• Dominicana DC-9 air disaster - crashed shortly after takeoff

Central America

Guatemala

• Cubana Flight 261: DC-10 crashed in Guatemala City killed 25 people.
• Aero Ruta Maya: On 24 August 2008, a Cessna Caravan 208 crashed 100 kilometers east of Guatemala City, near El Estor, killing 10 passengers, the pilot and the copilot. There were 5 American aid workers on the flight, of them, 4 survived.

Panama

• Alas Chiricanas bombing - Bombed near Colon
• COPA Flight 201 - Crashed in the near La Palma

Belgium

• Sabena OO-AUB crashed on landing approach near Ostend
• Sabena Flight 548 crashed on landing approach near Kampenhout, near Brussels
• British European Airways flight Bealine 706 crashed in Aarsele, near Tielt. All 63 on board died.

Bulgaria

• A Balkan Bulgarian Airlines Tupolev Tu-134 crashed near the village of Gabare. All 73 on people on board died.
• A Balkan Bulgarian Airlines Tupolev Tu-134 crashed on approach to Sofia Airport. All 50 people on board died.

Croatia

• British Airways flight 476 collided with Inex-Adria Aviopromet flight 550 in mid-air near Zagreb, killing 176 people on board.

Czech Republic

• JAT Yugoslav Flight 364, bombed, then crashed in Srbská Kamenice, Czechoslovakia
• Aeroflot Ruzyně Accident - during ILS approach the aircraft struck the ground nose, 467m short of the runway of Ruzyně International Airport, 66 people were killed
• Inex Adria Aviopromet Flight 450 crashed after hitting high ground during an ILS approach in fog in Prague - Suchdol district, 75 people were killed

• Air France Flight 4590 - Concorde that crashed in Gonesse, France
• Air France Flight 8969 - Hijacked after takeoff from Algiers and taken back in France
• Air France Flight 296 - first Airbus 320 crash
• Turkish Airlines Flight 981 - Crashed in Ermenonville, France (Ermenonville air disaster), 3 March 1974
• Varig Flight 820 - Crashed near Orly, France after a lavatory fire

• British European Flight 609, crashed in Munich, West Germany (Munich air disaster)
• Bashkirian Airlines Flight 2937, collided in mid-air with DHL Flight 611.
• Pan Am Flight 708 crashed near Berlin, Germany, killing all three people on board.

Greece

• TWA Flight 840 - Bombed on the way to Athens, Greece, sucking out 4 on board - the plane landed safely.
• Helios Airways Flight 522 - destroyed near Kalamos on way to Athens, with a manifest of 121.

Italy

• 30 October 2005, Trade Air cargo plane Let 410UVP-E19A crashed shortly after takeoff in Bergamo, Italy. Fatalities: 3
• on 8 October 2001,Scandinavian Airlines Flight 686 - Crashed upon takeoff in Milan, Italy (Linate Airport disaster)
• Itavia Flight 870 - Crashed off Ustica Island, Italy (Ustica Disaster)

Luxembourg

• Luxair Flight 9642, crashed on final approach to Luxembourg

Netherlands

• KLM Cityhopper Flight 431: Jet lost wing and partially disintegrated at after flying into tornado, crashing near Moerdijk.
• Bijlmer Disaster: El Al Flight 1862 crashed into 2 apartment buildings in Amsterdam.
• Turkish Airlines Flight 1951 Boeing 737-800 flying from Atatürk Airport in Istanbul to Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam crashed in a field during final approach. Of the 127 passengers and 7 crew on board 9 were killed, 85 were injured along with 26 severely.

Norway

• Bukken Bruse disaster, a flying boat crashed upon landing in Trondheim, Norway. 19 were killed; Bertrand Russell was among the 24 survivors.
• Braathens Flight 239, crashed in Asker upon landing at Fornebu airport, Oslo, Norway, killing 40 of 45 people on board. The aircraft was four nmi off course in bad weather conditions.
• Widerøe Flight 933, crashed into the Barents Sea near Mehamn, killing all 15 on board. This incident remains highly controversial in Norway.
• Torghatten accident, crashes in heavy fog, killing all 36 passengers in the worst-ever Dash 7 accident.
• Atlantic Airways Flight 670, a BAe 146, slides off the runway at Stord, Norway, killing four of the 16 people on board.
• Vaeroy accident, a Twin Otter crashes in the sea outside Værøy, killing all 5 persons on board.
• Vnukovo Airlines Flight 2801, a Tupolev Tu-154 crashes into a mountain on Svalbard killing all 141 people on board. Deadliest aviation accident ever in Norway.

Poland

• LOT Polish Airlines Flight 165, crashed into a mountain near Zawoja
• LOT Polish Airlines Flight 007, crashed near Okęcie Airport in Warsaw.
• LOT Polish Airlines Flight 5055, crashed in Kabacki Forest (Warsaw).
• Lufthansa Flight 2904, crashed during landing on Okęcie Airport in Warsaw.

Portugal

• Air Transat Flight 236, ran out of fuel over the Atlantic Ocean and glided successfully to the Azores.

Republic of Ireland

• Aer Lingus Flight 712 - Crashed in 1968, cause unknown.
• KLM Flight 633 - Ditched after takeoff from Shannon Airport.
• Air India Flight 182 - Bomb exploded 120 miles off the South West coast of Cork.

Russia

• Aeroflot Flight 411 crashes on take off from Sheremetyevo Airport (on 6 July 1982)
• Aeroflot Flight 593 crashed into a hillside in Siberia (on 23 March 1994)
• Siberia Airlines Flight 1047 crashed near Rostov on Don (24 August 2004, terror)
• Volga-AviaExpress Flight 1303 crashed in Tula Oblast (24 August 2004, terror)
• Armavia Flight 967 crashed during approach to Sochi airport (3 May 2006)
• S7 Airlines Flight 778 crashes in Irkutsk (on 9 July 2006)
• A Russian Tupolev-154 passenger plane with 170 people on board crashes north of Donetsk, in eastern Ukraine (on 22 August 2006).
• Aeroflot Flight 821 crashes on approach to Perm Airport en route from Moscow (on 14 September 2008). All 88 people on board were killed.

Serbia

• Spair Airlines Flight PAR-3601 crashed near Belgrade on (19 August 1996)

Slovakia

• Ilyushin IL-18B of the Bulgarian carrier TABSO crashed near Bratislava on 24 November 1966
• Ilyushin IL-18L of Czechoslovak Airlines crashed shortly before landing in Bratislava on 28 July 1976

Slovenia

• Britannia Airways G-ANBB, Crashed into a forest near Ljubljana, 1 September 1966.

Turkey

• Turkish Airlines Flight 452, a Boeing 727-2F2, flew into the slope of a hill at Karatepe in Isparta on September 19, 1976 killing 154 people.
• Turkish Airlines Flight 158, a Boeing 737-4Q8, crashed during its final approach to land at Ankara Esenboğa Airport in driving snow January 16, 1983.
• Turkish Airlines Flight 278, a Boeing 737-4Y0, crashed during its final approach to land at Van Ferit Melen Airport in driving snow, December 29, 1994.
• Turkish Airlines Flight 5904, a Boeing 737-4Q8, crashed in Ceyhan 8 minutes after take-off from Adana Şakirpaşa Airport, 7 April 1999.
• Turkish Airlines Flight 634, an Avro RJ100, crashed on its final approach during landing at Diyarbakır Airport, 8 January 2003.
• Atlasjet Flight 4203, a McDonnell Douglas MD-83, crashed on a hill during descent to Isparta Süleyman Demirel Airport, 30 November 2007.

United Kingdom

Wales

• 1950 a Fairflight Ltd Avro689 Tudor G-AKBY crashed at Llandow Airport, Cardiff, killing 80 passengers and crew.
• 1959 private charter Dove crashed on North Road, Cardiff after engine failure killing all four on board

England

• A Douglas C-47A-75-DL Dakota 3 cargo aircraft operated by Air Transport Charter en route from Ringway Airport, Manchester, to Nutts Corner Airport, Antrim, Northern Ireland, crashed shortly after take-off killing 4 of the 6 on board. Engine failure due to icing conditions. March 27 1951
• G-AKNU operated by Aquila Airways crashed in Chessel Down, Isle of Wight, UK killing 45 out of the 58 on board. November 15, 1957.
• Turkish Airlines international charter flight, a Vickers Viscount 793 carrying the Turkish prime minister and a party of government officials, crashed during its final approach to land at London Gatwick Airport in extensive fog. Five of the eight crew and nine of the sixteen passengers died in the crash. Prime minister Adnan Menderes was among the ten survivors. February 17, 1959

• British Airways Helicopter Flight between Penzance and the Isles of Scilly. Caused by pilot error.
• British Midland Flight 92, crashed in Kegworth, United Kingdom (Kegworth air disaster)
• British Airways Flight 5390, explosive decompression over Didcot, Oxfordshire, landed safely in Southampton, England.
• Pan Am Flight 125 (10 March 1987) - Cargo door incident. The aircraft returned to London-Heathrow when unable to pressurize the cabin.
• Ryanair Flight 296, engine fire at London Stansted Airport, United Kingdom
• British Airways Flight BA038, crash-landed at Heathrow Airport, United Kingdom

• KLM Constellation air disaster, crashed near Prestwick, Scotland, 1948.
• Dan Air G-BEKF, crashed off the Shetland Islands, 31 July 1979.
• Pan Am Flight 103, bomb exploded over Lockerbie, Scotland (Lockerbie disaster), 1988.

Northern Ireland

Various countries

• Olympic Airways Flight 417: Dr. Abid Hanson, a passenger on Olympic Airways Flight 417 from Cairo to Athens to New York City, who had a history of sensitivity to secondhand smoke requested a non-smoking seat prior. When the family boarded the aircraft in Athens, the people found that the assigned seats were three rows ahead of the economy class smoking area; there was no partition between the smoking and non-smoking section. The family requested a seat further away from the smoking section. The crew did not move the passenger to any of the 11 other unoccupied seats on the aircraft. The passenger felt a reaction to the smoke and died several hours later. The case resulted in the Olympic Airways v. Husain case.

Indian Ocean

• Ethiopian Airlines Flight 961 was hijacked on en route from Addis Ababa to Nairobi by three Ethiopians seeking political asylum. The plane crash-landed in the Indian Ocean near Comoros after running out of fuel, killing 125 of the 175 passengers and crew on board.

• Iran Air Flight 655 was a civilian airliner shot down by the United States Navy on Sunday over the Strait of Hormuz (Indian Ocean). All 290 on board were killed.

• Korean Air Flight 858 was destroyed by a bomb planted by North Korean agents on . All 115 on board perished.

• South African Airways Flight 295 crashed into the Indian Ocean in international waters off the coast of Mauritius on after a catastrophic in-flight fire. The cause of the fire was never determined. All 159 aboard perished.

• Yemenia Flight 626 crashed into the Indian Ocean off the Northern coast of Comoros on . 152 of 153 aboard perished; a 12-year-old passenger was found alive. The crash is currently under investigation.

• Globe Air charter flight crashed in bad weather near Nicosia Airport, 20 April 1967.

• ANA Douglas DC-3 Seven Mile Beach, near Hobart, 10 March, 1946
• ANA Douglas DC-4 crashed after departure Perth, Western Australia, 26 June 1950.
• TAA Fokker Friendship crashed on landing at Mackay, Queensland, 10 June 1960
• Ansett-ANA Vickers Viscount 720 en route Mount Isa - Longreach, 22 September 1966
• Robertson-Miller Airlines Vickers Viscount 720 in-flight wing separation Port Hedland ,31 December 1968
• Whyalla Airlines Flight 904 - crashed into Spencer Gulf on 31 May 2000 while en route to Whyalla
• The Ghost Flight - Beech Super King Air crashed in Queensland, Australia in September 2000 with all on board incapacitated

New Zealand

• Ansett New Zealand Flight 703 crashed during approach on Palmerston North, 5 June 1995.

The Americas (various countries)

• Aerolíneas Argentinas Flight 386 had in-flight meals loaded in Lima, Peru, and the aircraft landed in Los Angeles, California. The fish was contaminated with cholera, and several passengers later developed food poisoning. An elderly man died of the disease.

North America

Canada

• Air Canada Flight 143, commonly known as the Gimli Glider, ran out of fuel over northern Canada due to a maintenance error, and had to glide to a landing at a former airbase at Gimli, Manitoba on .
• Air Canada Flight 189 it crashed on takeoff in Toronto on due to pilot error and mechanical failure. Two passengers were killed.
• Air Canada Flight 621 crashed due to pilot error on while attempting to land at Toronto. All 109 people on board were killed.
• Air France Flight 358 burst into flames after overshooting the runway at Toronto Pearson International Airport on . There were no casualties.
• Air Ontario Flight 1363 crashed soon after takeoff on due to pilot error. 24 of 65 people on board were killed.
• Arrow Air Flight 1285 crashed shortly after takeoff on due to icing. All 256 aboard perished.
• Canadian Pacific Airlines Flight 21 crashed near 100 Mile House, British Columbia after an in-flight explosion on . All 52 aboard perished.
• Pacific Western Airlines Flight 314 crashed after thrust reversers did not fully stow following a rejected landing that was executed in order to avoid a snowplow on . The crash killed four of the crew members and 38 of the 44 passengers.
• Pacific Western Airlines Flight 501 burst into flames upon takeoff from Calgary International Airport on due to mechanical failure. No one was killed.
• Trans-Canada Air Lines Flight 831 crashed near Ste-Thérèse-de-Blainville, Quebec on for reasons unknown. All 118 aboard perished.

• Vasp Flight 168 - Crashed into the Aratanha mountains in Ceará, northeast Brazil.
• Varig Flight 254 - Crashed into a jungle near Sao Jose do Xingu into the Cachimbo mountains, central-west Brazil
• Tam Flight 402 - Crashed near the airport of Congonhas in São Paulo, southeast Brazil during the take-off.
• Gol Flight 1907 - Crashed into a jungle near Sao Jose do Xingu into the Cachimbo mountains, central-west Brazil after a collision.
• Rico Flight 4823 - Crashed near the city of Manaus, north Brazil.
• TAM Flight 3054 - Crashed near the airport of Congonhas in São Paulo, southeast Brazil during the landing.

Chile

• British South American Airways Avro Lancastrian Star Dust G-AGWH crashed in the Andes (the "STENDEC" incident)

Colombia

• American Airlines Flight 965 - Crashed into a mountain in Colombia.
• Avianca Flight 410 - Crashed in Santander, Colombia.

Ecuador

• Cubana Flight 389 - Crashed just north of Mariscal Sucre International Airport in Quito, killing 70 of its 91 occupants and 10 people on the ground.

Peru

• TANS Peru Flight 204, a Boeing 737-200 passenger plane which crashed during a storm in the Peruvian jungle, killing at least 40 people of the approximately 100 on board.
• LANSA Flight 508 on a flight from Lima to Pucallpa, Peru, breaks apart in mid-air after being set aflame by lightning. It crashes in the Amazonian Rainforest. 91 people die; the sole survivor is Juliane Koepcke, a 17-year old girl who survives a fall from 2 miles and 10-day walk through the jungle before being found by hunters. Her mother, famous ornithologist Maria Koepcke, dies; director Werner Herzog had narrowly missed being on the same flight.

Surinam

• Surinam Airways Flight 764 - Crashed at Zanderij airport, Surinam.

Venezuela

• West Caribbean Airways Flight 708 in western Venezuela; 160 killed, no survivors.
• Cubana Flight 3010: Russian-built Yak-42 crashed near Valencia, Venezuela and killed 22. The crash took the number of Cubana disasters from 1970 to 2000 to eight; one of them (see above) was the result of sabotage.

Taiwan Strait

• China Airlines Flight 611 suffered in-flight structural failure due to metal fatigue and explosive decompression, resulting in an in-flight breakup in the sea off the Penghu Islands on . All 225 on board were killed.

Tokyo Bay

• All Nippon Airways Flight 60 crashed into Tokyo Bay while on approach to land at Tokyo International Airport on killing 133 people in the deadliest single-plane incident until 1971. The cause of the crash is undetermined.
