Lynn Samuels (born September 2, 1942) is an
American
liberal radio
personality based in New York City
who currently hosts a weekday talk show on Sirius Satellite Radio channel
SIRIUS Left 146.
She was
previously known for her liberal stance on predominantly conservative talk radio
station WABC
, where she
was a host for over a decade, when she was regularly on-the-air
immediately after Rush Limbaugh before
he went national.
Samuels is known for her thick
New York
accent and frank approach towards life and politics. Her
presentation often includes colorful metaphors including "f-bombs"
and other curse words. In addition, she runs a news
blog, where she updates daily links to news stories and
promotes her
Sirius Satellite
Radio show.
Born in
Niagara
Falls
, New
York
and raised in the Bayside neighborhood of Queens
, Samuels
attended Bard
College
. Throughout her radio career she has
identified herself as a Jew. She listened to radio (starting with
soap operas) but never thought of talking behind the microphone
until she volunteered in the mid ‘70s to answer a public radio
station's phones during a fund-raising drive. As her political
awareness rose and her respect for the politically correct
broadcasters around her fell, she figured she could also become a
radio host. When someone at WBAI, New York got sick one night,
Samuels filled in.
After working at WBAI for 10 years, Samuels auditioned at WOR in
NYC; they hired an auto mechanic for the time slot instead. Soon
thereafter, WABC in NYC came calling and Samuels stayed for 10
years, maintaining good ratings even as the station's general
editorial position moved farther to the right. She was forced to
share her show with
Barry Farber, which
resulted in her departure from the station for a time. WABC fired
Samuels in 2002, citing budgetary reasons. After a short stint at
WLIE - AM 540 on Long Island, she was hired by Sirius.
In 1999, Samuels launched her low-tech news
website to share
news stories she thinks are important.
