History

The Michigan State Highway Department (forerunner of today's MDOT) designated M-149 on 1930-12-02. The designation was set up to provide access from US 2 northerly to Palms Brook State Park. A second highway, the first designation of M-125, was formed on 1931-08-31 to connect US 2 southerly with the Thompson State Fish Hatchery. When US 2 was rerouted in the Manistique area in 1935 and 1936, US 2 was moved south of the southern terminus of M-125. M-125 would be extended south to connect to the new US 2 routing on 1937-08-30. M-149 would be rerouted to connect with M-125 and replace in. No other changes to the routing of M-149 would be made.
