Dr Madsen Pirie

Dr (Duncan) Madsen Pirie (born 24 August 1940 in Hull) is the founder and current President the Adam Smith Institute which has been in operation since 1978. Dr. Pirie was also served as a Distinguished Visiting Professor of Logic and Philosophy at Hillsdale College, Michiganmarker, USA. Dr. Madsen Pirie has spent his life in pursuit of a greater understanding of the world through the means of philosophy, economics, and politics.

Early life and Education

Dr. Pirie is the son of Douglas Pirie and Eva Madsen. As a child he attended the Humberstone Foundation School (also known as Clee Grammar School for Boys and is now the comprehensive Matthew Humberstone Schoolmarker) on Clee Road in Old Cleemarker, Lincolnshiremarker.He is a graduate of the University of Edinburgh (UK), gaining an MA in 1970. From the University of St Andrewsmarker he gained a PhD in 1974, and at Pembroke College, Cambridgemarker he gained an MPhil in 1997.


Prior to helping found the Adam Smith Institute Dr. Madsen Pirie worked for the House of Representatives in the United States.. He has also enjoyed working very closely with educational institutions and was a Distinguished Visiting Professor of Logic and Philosophy at Hillsdale College in Michigan.. Also, his work in helping to develop the Citizen's Charter led to his appointment to the British Prime Minister's Advisory Panel from 1991-95.

Dr. Pirie was one of three Scots living in the United States that helped to found the Adam Smith Institute. The Institute is a U.K. based think tank that champions the ideas of free market policy. In January 2009 Foreign Policy and the University of Pennsylvaniamarker named the Adam Smith Institute among the top 10 think-tanks in the world outside of the US. The Institute is highly influential in UK public policy, and was "a pioneer of privatisation" in the UK and elsewhere.

Apart from his work within the Adam Smith Institute, he is the author of several books, including the best-selling How to Win Every Argument, The Book of the Fallacy: A Training Manual for Intellectual Subversives, Boost Your IQ, Freedom 101 and the Sherlock Holmes IQ Book. More recently he has authored a new book entitled "101 Great Philosophers". He is also the author of a series of science fiction novels for young adults.

Dr. Madsen also courted controversy in November 2008 by criticising the decision to let Lehman Brothers go into administration.. He appears regularly as an expert on CNN and BBC television, and is a keen film buff along with regularly participating in rocket launches at Cambridge.
