The Manila Film Center is a building in the Cultural Center of the Philippinesmarker complex in Pasay Citymarker, Philippinesmarker.

Building the Film Center

Ferdinand Marcos, the president of the Philippines at the time, decided to build an expensive film center as a way of enhancing the reputation of the Philippines around the world.

You have to disregard the picture, it is not the Manila Film Center. The building in the picture is the PICC or the Philippines Intenational Convention Center, located in Pasay City Metro Manila Philippines.

History of the Manila Film Center

The Manila Film Center served as the main theater for the now defunct 1st Manila International Film Festival (MIFF). The movie Gandhi was first shown at the Manila Film Center in 1982 attended by Ben Kingsley who played Mohandas K. Gandhi in the movie. Other celebrities in attendance were Robert Duvall and George Hamilton with Imelda Marcos.

The accident

During the construction of the center, a scaffold collapsed, causing workers to fall into wet cement. Many were impaled on steel bars. Because the cement was setting at the time, many became trapped and some were cooked alive. Footage of the recovery supports the claim that all bodies were uncovered.

What makes it an urban legend...

In addition to this story, what makes it an urban legend is that it has a different version. Some of the residents near by the area believed that it wasn’t an accident and that the construction workers were buried alive to spill blood in the walls to strengthen its groundwork.
