The Mantaro (river), Spanish: "el rio Montaro" is a long river running through the central region of Perumarker.Her Quechua(language) name was Hatunmayo,meaning: "Great river".


The river has its source at Lake Junínmarker at at a height of 4.080 m and she runs through the Department Junin provinces Junin, Yauli, Jauja, Conception and Huancayo, the departments Huancavelica and Ayacucho , then she returns to the department Junín through the province Satipowhere she unites with the Apurimac to form the Ene . Her hydrographic basin also comprises the department Pasco. She belongs to the hydrographic basin of the Amazon. Her principal tributaries are the Cunas and the Ichu .The river runs from northeast to southeast through the Montaro velley. This valley is the most important food provider for the capital Limamarker.In the Tayacaja , in the Department Huancavelica there is the hydrelectric powerplant of Montaro, delivering 50% of all electrical energy generated in Peru.
