Maps is the recording name used by Northamptonmarker-based musician James Chapman. Influences on Chapman are Spiritualized, whom "he loves", Galaxie 500, My Bloody Valentine, Mogwai and Low. He has claimed in an interview to reply to every MySpace message he receives personally.

Start Something

In 2006, he recorded Start Something EP by himself on his 16-track recorder. He released it on his own label Last Space Recordings and it was met with some critical acclaim. The single Lost My Soul polled at No. 26 in NME's top 50 singles of 2006.

We Can Create

On May 19, 2007, his first full album We Can Create was released on Mute Records. Since its release, the album has been seen as a critical success even though sales have been fairly modest. His first North American release, To the Sky EP, was digitally released on May 22 on the same label.

Maps has toured playing the album's songs with a full live line-up. Maps played the Latitude Festival in Southwold on July 13, as well as the Leeds and Reading Festivals on August 24 and 26. They played on 5 dates in the United Statesmarker later in the same year.

James is supported by four local musicians for live shows. Phil Thurlby & Matthew Roberts on keyboards and vocals, Andrew Lowther on bass and Ben Gordelier on Drums. "My band sounded a bit like The Stone Roses meets Spaceman 3, they sounded like Devo," he said for The Independent.

On July 17, it was announced that We Can Create had been nominated for the Mercury Music Prize. However, it lost out to Klaxons' debut album Myths of the Near Future.

Turning the Mind

On February 22, 2009, James wrote on his MySpace blog about his new upcoming album, saying "I've never been more confident and excited about this new album". In an interview he posted on the same blog, he mentioned the new album's themes as being "mental states" and "chemicals".

On March 1, he announced thirteen newly recorded tracks that could possibly appear on the album:

  • Turning the Mind
  • I Dream of Crystal
  • Let Go of the Fear
  • Valium in the Sunshine
  • Papercuts
  • Love will Come
  • Everything is Shattering
  • Nothing
  • The Note (These Voices)
  • From Here’s to Bliss
  • Chemeleon
  • Die Happy, Die Smiling
  • Without You

All of these tracks were included, except for "From Here's to Bliss", which is a bonus track.

According to an interview on James' new website for Maps, he said Turning the Mind would be darker, angrier and more electronic than his previous album We Can Create. Every two weeks, James posted a song from Turning the Mind onto his MySpace page.

On August 11, the track "Nothing" leaked onto YouTube accompanied by an unofficial music video.

Turning the Mind was released on September 28 in Europe and will be released on October 20 in North America.
