Introduction

Merced High School is located in Merced, Californiamarker as a part of the Merced Union High School District. Home of Scholars and Champions, it was originally known as El Capitan High School and changed its name in 1964. The current enrollment is over 2,000 students in grades 9 through 12 and is currently under Principal John Olsen.

Academics

The Merced High School Advanced Placement program is open for any student that wishes to be challenged in the fields of Chemistry, English, Physics, Government, Spanish, Biology, Calculus, Statistics and Studio Art. The teachers at Merced High School work very hard to ensure that their students work their hardest, which explains the high percentage of students that pass the Advanced Placement examinations with a score of 3, 4, or 5. Merced High School's Advanced Placement exam and test scores have earned it a place among the Top 1300 schools in the United States by Newsweek Magazine as well as a Bronze Award from US News & World Report, making it one of the top 1,800 schools in the United States.

The Merced High Academic Decathlon team took the title of 2009 Merced County Champions and competed in Sacramento in March, 2009 taking 5 medals.

Rivals

Merced High School was originally the only high school in Merced. Because of the dramatic increase in the number of students, Merced High School was forced to bus students to what became known as "East Campus". The city then decided that a second high school was needed, and in 1994, Golden Valley High Schoolmarker was established. There, to this day, still remains an extreme amount of competition between the two schools. Before Golden Valley was established, the only rival to Merced High were the Atwater High School Falconsmarker.
