Rotherham is a metropolitan borough of South Yorkshiremarker, England. It is named for its main town, Rotherhammarker. Despite a swing against Labour in 2008, it is one of the safest Labour councils in the country and now their only safe council in Yorkshire. Neighbouring districts Barnsley and Wakefieldmarker are also held by Labour but only by a majority of one in each case.

The district was formed on 1 April 1974, under the Local Government Act 1972, as a merger of the former county borough of Rotherham, with Maltbymarker, Rawmarshmarker, Swintonmarker and Wath upon Dearnemarker urban districts along with Rotherham Rural District and Kiveton Park Rural Districtmarker.
