Minnesota State Highway 16 is a two-lane highway in southeast Minnesotamarker, which runs from its interchange with Interstate Highway 90 in Dextermarker and continues east to its eastern terminus at the Mississippi River in La Crescentmarker, where Minnesota 16 runs concurrent with U.S. Highways 14 and 61 for two miles to the Wisconsin state line. Wisconsin Highway 16 meets the three routes at the border.

Minnesota 16 was designated as a National Scenic Byway in 2003 as the Historic Bluff Country Scenic Byway. Highway 16 follows the route of old U.S. Highway 16.

State Highway 16 serves as an east-west arterial route between Dextermarker, Spring Valleymarker, Prestonmarker, Rushfordmarker, Houstonmarker, and La Crescentmarker in southeast Minnesota.

The route passes through the counties of:

Highway 16 parallels Interstate Highway 90 throughout its route in southeast Minnesota.

The route passes through the Richard J. Dorer State Forest in Fillmoremarker and Houstonmarker counties.

Forestville Mystery Cave State Parkmarker is located on Highway 16 in Fillmore Countymarker. The park is located between Spring Valleymarker and Prestonmarker.

The eastern terminus for Minnesota 16 is its junction with U.S. Highways 14, 61, and Wisconsin Highway 16 at the Minnesotamarker - Wisconsinmarker border (at La Crescentmarker). After crossing the Mississippi River (in this case, the state line) on the Mississippi River Bridgemarker, the highway continues on as Wisconsin Highway 16.

The western terminus for Minnesota 16 is its interchange with Interstate Highway 90 in Dextermarker.

Highway 16
State Highway 16 was designated in 1980. The route was originally part of old U.S. Highway 16 from 1926 to 1980.

U.S. 16 was mostly replaced by Interstate Highway 90 within Minnesota.

State Highway 16 from Dextermarker to La Crescentmarker is the only remaining section of this former U.S. route that exists as a trunk highway separate from Interstate Highway 90.

The only section of U.S. Highway 16 that remains in the present day is the east-west route between Rapid City, South Dakotamarker and Yellowstone National Parkmarker in Wyomingmarker.
