Mooney Mooney is a suburb of the Central Coastmarker region of New South Walesmarker, Australia, located on the north bank of the Hawkesbury Rivermarker north of Sydneymarker. It is part of the City of Gosfordmarker local government area.

Profile

Mooney Mooney is located at the end of a peninsula extending southwards into the Hawkesbury River estuary and includes two islands. It formerly included Cheero Pointmarker, which was separately gazetted on 21 March 2003. Mooney Mooney is the point at which the Sydney-Newcastle Freeway and Pacific Highway cross from the Central Coast into Sydneymarker's metropolitan area at Brooklynmarker in the Hornsby Shiremarker.

Land use is mixed, with a small residential area east of the Pacific Highway which unlike many surrounding areas is serviced by sealed roads, electricity, telephone and reticulated water supply, and is characterised by hilly topography with slopes ranging from moderate to very steep Offshore to the west, linked by road, is the former Peat Islandmarker hospital operated by the Department of Community Services. Oyster farms and related depuration depots are located in the suburb's south.

The Deerubbun Reserve adjoining the freeway at the suburb's southwest has been developed for public access to the Hawkesbury River and includes a boat ramp, parking area, picnic tables and public amenities. The Spectacle Islandmarker is an offshore nature reserve managed by the National Parks and Wildlife Service.
