The N8 Group comprises eight research-intensive universities in northern England. Rather than being a lobbying group (such as the Russell Group), it is a research partnership intended to enhance collaboration between the universities in the group. The N8 universities undertake more than £720 million of research and employ over 8,200 academic staff, thus making N8 the largest research-pooling partnership ever undertaken in the UK.

Research

The group has initially been focusing on five areas of research:
  1. Ageing and Health;
  2. Energy Research and Development;
  3. Foresight for Sustainable Water Use;
  4. Molecular Engineering;
  5. Regenerative Medicine.

N8 was awarded grant funding of £6m from The Northern Way Growth Fund in March 2007 to set up 'virtual' collaborative Research Centres around each of these themes. Each Centre is led by an academic director, and is supported by a business development team.
