North Malabar is the erstwhile Kolathu Nadu. Kolathu Nadu comprised Thulunadu, Chirakkal and Kadathanadu. During the British Raj the area except Mahémarker was under Madras State. After independence of Indiamarker the area became part of Kerala Statemarker except Mahémarker, which became a Sub-Division of Pondicherrymarker. The area of North Malabar begins at Korapuzha in the south and ends at Manjeswaram in the north. The area now falls under four districts of Kerala i.e whole Kasaragodemarker and Kannurmarker districts, Vadakara Taluk of Kozhikode districtmarker and Mananthavadymarker Taluk of Waynadmarker district and the entire Mahémarker Sub-Division of Pondicherrymarker State.

Culture and geography

The culture and geography of this area have many distinctions from left over Keralamarker.The major festival of Hindus in this region is Vishu instead of Onam which is the major festival of Hindus in rest of Keralamarker. Unlike rest of Keralamarker the Hindu religion people of this region cooks and eat non-veg food during these festivals. Similarly, unlike rest of Kerala, the muslim community of this region follows Marumakkathayam.This is a really secular area. People from all religions participate in major festival of Temples, Mosques and Churches. Few examples are : Nadapurammarker Mosque, Mahe Church and Theyyam ritual art.
