North West Leicestershire is a local government district in Leicestershiremarker, Englandmarker. Its main towns are Ashby-de-la-Zouchmarker and Coalvillemarker.

It contains East Midlands Airportmarker, which has flights to the rest of Britain and various places in Europe. It is also notable for Castle Doningtonmarker, site of Donington Parkmarker, a grand-prix circuit and site for music festivals.

In Parliament, it is represented by David Taylor (Labour).

This district has a long history of mineral extraction, with coal, brick clay, gravel and granite amongst the products. All the deep coal mines are now closed, but opencast continues.

It was formed in 1974 by a merger of Ashby de la Zouchmarker Urban District, Ashby Wouldsmarker Urban District, Coalvillemarker Urban District, Ashby de la Zouch Rural Districtmarker, Castle Donington Rural Districtmarker and Ibstockmarker from the Market Bosworth Rural Districtmarker.

BMI (British Midland), an airline, is headquartered in Donington Hallmarker, Castle Doningtonmarker.

Energy policy

In May 2006, a report commissioned by British Gas [43875] showed that housing in North West Leicestershire produced the 18th highest average carbon emissions in the country at 6,946 kg of carbon dioxide per dwelling.
