This article is about the railway company Northern Spirit. For the Australian football club of the same name, see Northern Spirit FC.

Northern Spirit was a train operating company in the United Kingdommarker in the 1990s, running trains in the north of Englandmarker. It was formed when the Regional Railways North East shadow franchise was let to MTL. Northern Spirit started its operations in 1997 and continued until 2000. At this point, MTL ran into difficulties and the company was sold to Arriva, who renamed it as Arriva Trains Northern.

Northern Spirit ran a variety of services in the north of England around connecting cities such as Sheffieldmarker, Leedsmarker, Yorkmarker and Manchestermarker.

Northern Spirit also ran the TransPennine Express services, branded as 'transpenninexpress', usually with rolling stock more suited to the longer journeys such as the Class 156 Super Sprinter and Class 158 Express Sprinter. However, when Arriva Trains Northern's services were merged with that of First North Western's into a new franchise operated by Northern Rail, TransPennine Express became a franchise in its own right and is now operated by First TransPennine Express.
