State Route 281 is an east-west state highway in the northwestern portion of the U.S. state of Ohiomarker. Its western terminus is at U.S. Route 24 approximately northeast of Defiancemarker, and its eastern terminus is at U.S. Route 6 nearly 1½ miles north of Bradnermarker. The majority of the route is known as the Defiance Pike.

History

  • 1931 – Original route established; originally routed along its current alignment from State Route 109 to State Route 65.
  • 1935 – Extended west to State Route 18 and east to State Route 25 along previously unnumbered roads.
  • 1939 – Extended east to its current terminus via a previously unnumbered road from State Route 25 to Waynemarker and via a former alignment of State Route 297 from Wayne to 1½ miles north of Bradnermarker.
  • 1972 – Extended to its current western terminus along with State Route 18 for just over 1½ miles west, and then north on a newly constructed road.
