One Woodward Avenue is a
high-rise building in Detroit,
Michigan
.
It
overlooks Hart Plaza, Cobo Hall
, and the Detroit
River. It contains 29 stories (28 floors with one
basement level), and reaches a height of 430 feet (131 m).
It is
connected directly to the Guardian Building
by an enclosed walkway over W. Larned
Street.
Architect
Minoru Yamasaki designed
One Woodward Avenue.
His first skyscraper, he used it to formulate
his design for the now-destroyed World Trade Center
in New York
City
. His design for McGregor Memorial Conference
Center at Wayne State
University
is also highly regarded by architects.
Yamasaki commissioned
Giacomo
Manzù, an
Italian sculptor with important liturgical commissions in
St. Peter's in Rome, to craft Detroit's
Passo di Danza
(step of dance) at the One Woodward Avenue building.
At night, the large "cube" at the top is lit up with large
floodlights, color-coded with seasonal events.
Near
Christmas, it is lit green, red, and
white; in the summer, around the U.S.
Independence Day and
Canada Day, it is red, white and blue; and it is
silver-gold prior to the U.S.
Thanksgiving celebration in November.
