The "Colegio Mayor de Nuestra Se√Īora del Rosario - Universidad del Rosario" (El Rosario University) is a university originally founded on Roman Catholic principles, in 1653 by Fray Cristobal de Torres. Located in Bogot√°marker, Colombiamarker, due to its important place in Colombian history, it is known as "the cradle of the republic". Most faculties used to reside in the main campus in the historic-geographical centre of Bogot√° in the historic district of La Candelariamarker. Now days this institution is based on secular ideas and is very influential in Colombian culture and public life. At least 28 of the Colombia's presidents have been students of this university and it has influenced and participated in very important transitional processes like the revolution for the independence from Spain and the Political National Constitution of 1991. As a curious fact one of the most important times of the 1886 Constitution's Supreme Court (1936), the so called golden court, was composed in its majority by lawyers from the Faculty of Jurisprudence.

History

Under the authorization of king Philip IV of Spain, the Archbishop of Santa Fe, Fray Cristobal de Torres, in 1653 founded the Colegio Mayor de Nuestra Senora del Rosario. Then, by the Royal Decree of 1768 of Charles III, is recognized as a College statute like the six halls of Spain, which continues the tradition in American university of Salamancamarker.

*Secretaria General:Its mission is to provide institutional acts of faith serving as notaries and ensuring the legal acts which are carried out, and also ensure the preservation and restoration of historical heritage of the University. Also supports the Dean and "Consiliatura" to fulfill their duties, guarding and preparing official documents and ensuring that its decisions are communicated and enforced. Interesting Facts

  • It is Colombia's oldest higher education institution, never having interrupted instruction during its 355 years of existence, except for a couple of years in 1819 when General Morillo of Spain pursued reconquest of Colombian territory; during those years it served as a prison, and many of the republic's most notable characters were held imprisoned at the University.


  • Jose Celestino Mutis taught astrology and math at the University beginning on March 13, 1762. He is buried at the University's chapel. For over five years, from 1762 to 1767, Jose Celestino Mutis was a professor at Rosario taught Mathematics, Physical and Natural Sciences in Latin.


  • Externado University of Colombiamarker is a Colombian university founded in Bogota on February 15, 1886 by Nicholas Pinz√≥n Warlosten, along with some professors and students expelled from the "Colegio Mayor de Nuestra Senora del Rosario", because of his radical liberal ideal, which by then was revalued due to the end of the liberal hegemony in the national government.


  • In 1790 after several attempts to consolidate the faculty of medicine, Dr. Vincent Cancino Rom√°n was appointed responsible of the medicine faculty, and of his few disciples only one, the young Juan Bautista Vargas graduated in 1974, shortly before the death of his preceptor, so it was this Major College was the first to graduate a doctor in this lands, becoming the first medical catedra in Colombia.

The Virgin of "La Bordadita"

"The Bordadita" Virgin is the Patron of the College, and chairs the Chapel with its name which is located at the left side of the Cloister. The picture wears a cloak of gold and diamonds in beauty, who wove the Queen Margaret of Austria. This is evidenced by the General Pedro Alcantara Herran, in Book III Role Illustrated Newspaper, p. 383: "The church is simple construction, was the main altar, which the revered patron of the College, in the same image carved by the real Queen Margaret of Austria, and was generally known with the name of the "Bordadita". However, this is impossible because the chapel received the name thanks to the virgin who arrived there without knowing how, as Margaret of Austria and her husband never come into contact with Fray Cristobal de Torres before this left Europe.

The Historica Archive

Preserves original documents on the history of the university, which is part of the history of Colombia. The oldest document dates from 1646. The Cloister ("El Claustro")

This architectural symbol is in the Historic Center of Santa Fe de Bogota, separated from the Avenida Jimenez de Quesada by Plazoleta del Rosario and located at 14th Street and Old Town Street, classified by experts as the oldest in the city, thus informing the Teusaquillo Zipa with the urban areas demarcated by the conquerors. The Senate is the headquarters of the Universidad del Rosario, was built in the colonial era in the style of the seventeenth century by School Fray Cristobal de Torres. The entry is framed by an old green door, where you can admire the imposing statue of the founder, Fray Cristóbal de Torres, erected in bronze by sculptor Catalan Renart Dionisio Garcia in 1909.

This landmark city par excellence, has preserved throughout these three centuries of its arches and columns, but was significantly altered in the nineteenth century. In the 50s, the painter Luis A. Acu√Īa rebuilt it entirely, inside and out, without fully recover original architecture of the colonial era, while retaining their original beauty. This two-story buildings are works of art, the plates reminiscent of heroes, poets and judges, as testimony to the history of the Rosary. The Aula Magna, where the main ceremonies are held, is one of the best art galleries and stores Colombian beautiful images produced by centuries of the most preclaros brushes of the motherland.

Prominent Rosarists

In almost four centuries of history, many distinguished figures in public events in Colombia have been formen at the Universidad del Rosario, including thirty-four presidents of the republic and many other members of their cabinets. In Colombia there has never been a government that does not count in his cabinet with a rosarist. Among them:
