Geography
According to the
U.S.
Census Bureau, the
county has a total area of 986 square miles (2,552 km²),
of which, 953 square miles (2,468 km²) of it is land and
33 square miles (84 km²) of it (3.30%) is water.

census of 2000, there were 27,026
people, 10,594 households, and 7,447 families residing in the
county. The
population density
was 28 people per square mile (11/km²). There were 14,102 housing
units at an average density of 15 per square mile (6/km²). The
racial makeup of the county was 88.19%

There were 10,594 households out of which 30.40% had children under
the age of 18 living with them, 55.60% were
married couples living together, 10.40% had a
female householder with no husband present, and 29.70% were
non-families. 26.20% of all households were made up of individuals
and 12.90% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or
older. The average household size was 2.52 and the average family
size was 3.02.
In the county, the population was spread out with 26.00% under the
age of 18, 8.20% from 18 to 24, 25.90% from 25 to 44, 23.60% from
45 to 64, and 16.40% who were 65 years of age or older. The median
age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 96.70 males. For
every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.30 males.
The median income for a household in the county was $31,203, and
the median income for a family was $36,977. Males had a median
income of $28,526 versus $18,834 for females. The
per capita income for the county was
$15,454. About 12.30% of families and 15.90% of the population were
below the
poverty line, including
20.50% of those under age 18 and 11.80% of those age 65 or
over.
