Song information

"Patience" debuted at number four on the UK Singles Chart and rose to number one in its second week, staying there for four weeks. It was the 8th best-selling single in the UK of 2006 and spent eleven weeks in the top ten, making it the longest that any Take That single had spent in the top ten until the release of 2007's "Rule The World". The song also became the 30th best selling single of 2007, the following year. The song just missed out on being the UK Christmas number one of 2006, being knocked off the top spot on Christmas Eve by X-Factor winner Leona Lewis' "A Moment Like This".The song was also the 20th best selling single of 2006 in Ireland.

The song also won the Best British Single Award at the 2007 BRIT Awards and was voted The Record of the Year for 2006, polling 15.5% of the final vote. On 18 February, 2007, it re-entered the UK top 10 after 14 weeks in the charts and on 11 August, 2007, following the band's performance at the Concert for Diana, the single reentered the UK top 40.

The song debuted at number one on the German Singles Chart, and since its release it has sold over 150,000 copies being certified Gold by the IFPI. Indie-rock band The Wombats also chose to cover this song on the 9th of January 2008 for BBC Radio 1's Live Lounge.

Hank Marvin also covered this song on his 2007 album Guitar Man.

The song has sold 535,000 copies in the UK as stated by the Official UK Charts Company and has received a Gold sales status certification.

American pop singer Nick Lachey released his own version of the song on January 27, 2009 as the first single off his upcoming album "Coming Up For Air".

In 2009, Serbianmarker boy band OT Band recorded a cover version of it in Serbian language.

Music video

The video was directed by David Mould and was shot in Icelandmarker. The video shows all of the members going on a solo journey holding a microphone and a stand, they treck across rough terrain during the day time. The band eventually all make it to a point by the edge of a cliff, towards the end of the song. The setting then changes to dark and the band all sing the song together, whilst 40 foot water explosions happen behind them.

Nick Lachey version

American pop singer Nick Lacheyreleased his own version of the song on January 27, 2009 as the first single off his upcoming album "Coming Up For Air".

Release and Performance

The song was released on January 27, 2009.The song failed to impact the charts of the U.S.Amarker, while the Take That version was a big hit in the UKmarker.

Critical reception

Billboard gave the song a positive review: "In late 2006, Brit boy band Take That scored a career-redefining comeback with "Patience," which spent a month at the top of the singles charts at home and won record of the year at the BRIT Awards. It's now recast as the first single from Nick Lachey's third solo album, following his 2006 gold showing "What's Left of Me" and the No.6 Billboard Hot 100 title track. His reading is awfully close to the original, but Take That is pretty much an unknown in the United States (having scored just one hit, 1995's "Back for Good"), so most stateside listeners won't even know it's a cover. It's also a quintessential fit for Lachey's rep as a master balladeer. His version turns up the guitars a few degrees and chugs with more urgency, while showcasing a vocal that demonstrates the innate control he proved a decade ago as a 98 Degrees lead. While solo white males remain the exception at top 40 radio, Lachey has the advantage of a major label in his corner."Patience" sounds like the start of a promising new chapter for a deserving interpreter."
