Pele is a volcano on the surface of Jupiter's moon Io. It is named after the Hawaiianmarker volcano goddess Pele. The volcano is located at 18.7° South Latitude, 255.3° West Longitude. The volcano consists of a volcanic depression long by wide, at the northern base of a rifted plateau known as Danube Planum. A lake consisting of basaltic lava fills part of the depression, releasing tremendous amounts of energy into space. This lava lake is also the source of a plume of gas and dust that reaches as high as above the surface before the material is deposited in a ring of red material as far as from the volcano.
