ΦAΔ (Phi Alpha Delta), or PAD, is the largest co-ed professional law fraternity in the United States of America. It was founded in 1902 and today has over 270,000 initiated members. Phi Alpha Delta has members who are university students, law school students, lawyers, judges, senators, and even presidents. Statistically, approximately one out of six attorneys in the United States are members of P.A.D.

P.A.D. Declaration of Purpose and Motto

The purpose of this Fraternity shall be to form a strong bond uniting students and teachers of the law with members of the Bench and Bar in a fraternal fellowship designed to advance the ideals of liberty and equal justice under law; to stimulate excellence in scholarship; to inspire the virtues of compassion and courage; to foster integrity and professional competence; to promote the welfare of its members; and to encourage their moral, intellectual, and cultural advancement; so that each member may enjoy a lifetime of honorable professional and public service.

Motto: Service to the student, the school, the profession, and the community.

Organization and Government

Pursuant to the Constitution and By-Laws of Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity, International, the supreme governing body of the Fraternity, is the International Chapter in Convention Assembled. The International Chapter is composed of up to two delegates and alternates from each of active law school and alumni chapter, up to two alumni members at large from each district, each district justice, each international officer, and each former Supreme or International Justice in attendance. Conventions are convened every two years, usually in August.

Between conventions the Fraternity is governed by an International Executive Board (IEB)composed of the International Justice, the International Vice Justice, the International Secretary, the International Treasurer, the International Advocate, and 4 Members at Large. An Internatioanl Tribunal composed of the Chief Tribune and two Associate Tribunes hold judicial authority within the Fraternity. All 12 International Officers are elected at the Biennial Conventions.

For organization purposes, the fraternity is geographically divided into thirty-two districts covering North America. For each district, the International Justice with the advice and consent of the IEB appoints a District Justice to serve as regional coordinator and work with the law school and alumni chapters within his district. Each District Justice may have one or more Assistant District Justices to assist him/her in his/her work. It is anticipated that additional district level officers, "District Presidents" will be appointed to perform similar tasks with respect to the pre-law chapters in the district.

Fraternity firsts

Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity, International is a professional service organization composed of pre-law students, law students, legal educators, attorneys, judges, and government officials. Phi Alpha Delta was founded in 1902 for the purpose of promoting professional competency and achievement within the legal profession.

It is also the first law fraternity to admit women.

Since the beginning, Phi Alpha Delta (PAD) has experienced astounding growth and today is the world’s largest law fraternity with over 280 pre-law chapters, 198 law school chapters and 97 alumni chapters in the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico and Mexico.

PAD is the only law fraternity to recognize the needs of pre-law students and develop a program to help them as they pursue a career in the law.

Currently the University of Arizona has been named the number one Pre-Law Chapter for ten consecutive years as Most Outstanding Chapter, as voted by Nationals.

In addition, PAD is the only law fraternity to sponsor an Annual International Conference and a Mock Trial Competition specifically addressing the needs of pre-law students.

PAD is the only law fraternity to receive federal funding from the U.S. Department of Justice for its Law Related Education program and the first law fraternity to enter the information superhighway. The PAD Pre-Law Listserve provides a forum for pre-law students to discuss legal topics, programming ideas and chapter events.
