Pier Luigi Bersani (born on 29 September 1951) is an Italianmarker politician and the current secretary of the the Italian Democratic Party. He was elected to the Italian Chamber of Deputies in the 2006 General election. Subsequently, on May 17, 2006, he was appointed as Minister of Productive Assets in the cabinet of Romano Prodi.

On October 25, 2009 he defeated incumbent Dario Franceschini and Ignazio Marino in primaries held to elect the secretary of the Democratic Party. He scored 55% among party members.

Career

Bersani was born in Bettolamarker, Province of Piacenza (Emilia-Romagna).

He studied at the liceo Melchiorre Gioia in Piacenza and graduated in philosophy from University of Bolognamarker. He joined the Italian Communist Party and subsequently the Democratic Party of the Left. As member of the National Secretariat of the Democrats of the Left, he was responsible for the economic sector. He was the Vice-Chairman of the comune of Piacenzamarker, then Vice-Chairman of the Piacenza Province Council in 1990.

He was a President of Emilia-Romagna from 1994 to 1996, then Minister for Industry, Commerce and Tourism (1996-1999) and Minister for Transports (1999-2001). From 2001 to 2004 he was a member of the Chamber of Deputies of Italy.

In 2004 he was elected to the European Parliamentmarker representing the North-West region for the Democrats of the Left, part of the Socialist Group, and sat on the European Parliamentmarker's Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs.

He was a substitute for the Committee on the Internal Market and Consumer Protection, a member of the Delegation to the European Union-Kazakhstanmarker, EU-Kyrgyzstanmarker and EU-Uzbekistanmarker Parliamentary Cooperation Committees, and for relations with Tajikistanmarker, Turkmenistanmarker and Mongoliamarker, and a substitute for the Delegation for relations with Belarusmarker. He left the European Parliament on his re-election to the Chamber of Deputies in 2006.

He co-founded the Association NENS ("New Economy, New Society"), and is chairman of the Association Nuova Romea. Bersani was awarded the Legion of Honour of the French Republicmarker.
