
Pontevedra province
Pontevedra is a province of Spain
along the
country's Atlantic
coast
in southwestern Europe. The province forms the southwestern part of
the autonomous
community of Galicia
.
It is
bordered by the provinces of A
Coruña, Lugo
, and
Ourense
, and the country of Portugal
.
The
population of the province is 943,117 (2006), of which no more than
8% live in the capital, the city of Pontevedra
.
Geography
Pontevedra is cut in two parts by the
Lérez River. Most of the major tourist
attractions in Pontevedra are to the south of the river. Pontevedra
features many historical buildings, monuments, and churches.
Much of the
Rías Baixas
Denominación de
Origen is located in the province.
The province similarly
shares the Parque Nacional das Illas Atlánticas de Galicia national
park with neighbouring A Coruña
province.
Demographics
The
province's capital is not its largest city, which is instead the
port of Vigo
with a
population of 300,000. In addition, there are 62
municipalities in the province.
