Prahlad Kakkar (born 24 March 1950) is a leading Indian ad film director, most known as the creator of the famous Pepsi TV commercial with Amitabh Bachchan and Sachin Tendulkar, he is also the founder-director of Director for Genesis Film Production, one of India’s leading production houses, established in 1977

He is known for his candid and outspoken nature. An avid scuba diver, in 1995 he set up 'Lacadives', a scuba-diving school, along with his wife Mitali Kakar at Kadmat Islandmarker, in collaboration of the Govt. of Lakshadweepmarker, and in 2000, he became a CMAS 2 Star Scuba Diving Instructor. Plus he also runs a coffee shop, and Casa Amore, a wine bar and restaurant, set up in Mumbaimarker in 2001. .

Early life

Born in Mumbai, his father was a colonel in Pakistan and mother half Burmese and half Marathi, who settled in Gurgaonmarker.

In 1966, he passed out from from Sainik School, Kunjpura, Karnalmarker, and 1970, he graduated with Economics (Honors) from Fergusson College, Punemarker.


Prahlad Kakkar joined advertising in 1971, as an Accounts Executive in ASP, Delhi, subsequently after a year, he was transferred to its Bombay office. In 1972 itself, he joined 1972: Joined renowned feature director, Shyam Benegal, as an Asst. Director on films such as ‘Ankur’, ‘Manthan’, and ‘'Bhumika’.

Prahlad Kakkar founded Genesis Film Productions in 1977. He started it after training under Shyam Benegal, along with Manjit Kakar and Ravi Uppor. The going was tough initially, though today, Genesis is considered a top-grade advertisement film making agency. He is popular for his Kamasutra ads.

He also ventured into film making with Bitter Rain, and 2004 produced, the short film "Bali" for Star One channel. He owns a restaurant, Sarson da saag, in Mumbai.

In 1994, he co-founded Reefwatch Marine Conservation, an NGO involved in Marine conservation.

Personal life

Prahlad Kakkar is married to Mitali Dutt Kakkar, also an ad maker and owner of Offspring and Offshoot, production companies. They have two sons Arnav, Varun and a daughter, Anajinsama.
