The
Prix Robert Papin is a Group 2 flat
horse race in France
which is
open to two-year-old thoroughbred
colts and fillies. It is run at Maisons-Laffitte
over a distance of 1,100 metres (about 5½
furlongs), and it is scheduled to take place each year in late
July.
History
The event was established in 1892, and it was originally called the
Omnium de Deux Ans. Its distance was initially set
at 1,100 metres, and this was extended to 1,200 metres in 1903.
From its launch until 1906 it was held on the first Sunday in
August. During this period it usually attracted a large field –
two-year-olds could not be raced in France before August 1. It
reverted to 1,100 metres in 1907, and from this point juveniles
could race earlier in the year. With prize money of 50,000
francs in 1911, the Omnium de Deux Ans was
France's richest race for two-year-olds. It remained so until 1914,
ahead of both the
Prix Morny and the
Grand Critérium. It was
not run from 1915 to 1918 due to
World War
I.
The race was given its present title, the
Prix Robert
Papin, in 1928. This was in memory of Robert Papin
(1848–1926), a founding member and later the president of the
Société Sportive d'Encouragement. As a writer for horse
racing magazines he used the name Robert de Lizy, and he was also
known by this name when he became a racehorse owner. The distance
of the Prix Robert Papin was increased to 1,200 metres in
1929.
The event was transferred away from Maisons-Laffitte twice during
World War II.
The 1940 running was
contested at Auteuil
over 1,400 metres, and it took place in late
October. The race's regular length was cut to 1,100
metres in 1942, and two years later it was run at Longchamp
over 1,000 metres. Its usual distance
returned to 1,200 metres in 1946, and this was shortened back to
1,100 metres in 1963.
When the current system of race grading was introduced in 1971, the
Prix Robert Papin was classed at the highest level, Group 1. The
only post-war departure from Maisons-Laffitte came in 1977, when it
was held at Evry. The race was relegated to Group 2 status in
1988.
