The properties of the Holy See in Italy are regulated by the 1929 Lateran Treaty signed with the Kingdom of Italy. They all have extraterritorial status.

Outside Vatican City but inside Rome



Outside Rome

  • Pontifical Palace, Villa Barberini and the Villa Cybo (plus adjacent gardens) in the town of Castel Gandolfomarker (around 55 hectares).
  • Area of Santa Maria di Galeria, where the antennas of Radio Vaticanamarker are located. The area was donated by Italymarker to the Holy See in the 1950s.


Each of those two areas are actually larger than Vatican City itself.

The Fundamental Accord, signed in 1993, grants sovereignty to the Holy See over various Christian holy sites in Israel, but the agreement was never finalized because of diplomatic problems with the Israeli government.

Ceded to the Holy See, but without extraterritorial status
