Prostitution in Zanzibar
is illegal
under Tanzanian law, however it is still
widespread particularly child prostituiton. The main causes
of this are poverty, lack of job opportunities and culture.
There are
many prostitutes in Zanzibar from other countries including
Uganda, Kenya
, Zambia
, Ethiopia
and Somalia
.
Reports show that an increase in cases of
HIV
and
AIDS are growing at an alarming rate in
Zanzibar. This is thought to have been added to by large numbers of
tourists entering Zanzibar and fuelling demand for
prostitutes.
