The borough of Redcar & Cleveland is a unitary authority in the ceremonial county of North Yorkshire, Englandmarker consisting of Redcarmarker, Saltburn-by-the-Seamarker, Guisboroughmarker, and small towns such as Brottonmarker, Estonmarker, Skeltonmarker and Loftusmarker. It had a resident population of 139,132 in 2001, and is part of the Tees Valleymarker economic area. It is represented in Parliament by the barrister Vera Baird (Labour) for the Redcarmarker constituency and by Ashok Kumar (Labour) for the Middlesbrough South and East Clevelandmarker constituency.

Cllr Brian Briggs, Mayor of the Redcar and Cleveland for 2009/2010
district was created in 1974 as the borough of Langbaurgh, one of four districts of the new non-metropolitan county of Clevelandmarker. It was formed from the Coatham, Eston Grange, Kirkleatham, Ormesby, Redcar and South Bank wards of the county borough of Teessidemarker, along with Guisboroughmarker, Loftusmarker, Saltburn and Marske-by-the-Seamarker and Skelton and Brottonmarker urban districts, from the North Riding of Yorkshire. The borough was named after the ancient Langbaurghmarker wapentake of Yorkshiremarker. On 1 January 1988 the borough was renamed as Langbaurgh-on-Tees.

Cleveland was abolished on 1 April 1996, with its districts becoming unitary authorities. At this time Langbaurgh-on-Tees was renamed Redcar and Cleveland.

The Borough Council's administrative HQ is situated in the Teesville area of Greater Eston, on Fabian Road. The Council also has offices in Redcar at Kirkleatham Street and in Guisborough.

With typical political confusion associated with the Teesside region the areas south of the Tees are designated as part of the ceremonial/geographical county of North Yorkshire whilst the whole region, as Tees Valley, exists alongside Durham, Tyne and Wear and Northumberland to form the North East region.

In 2002, the borough transferred its council housing stock of over 10,000 homes to an independent housing association established for the purpose, Coast & Country Housing Limited.
