Rex Liu (born March 3, 1982) is a noted
Canadian-born British
classical bassoonist.
His nuanced musical phrasing and warm, rounded tone are strongly
influenced by
Michael
Chapman.
He studied at the Royal
Conservatory of Music
, and pursued his undergraduate education at
Trinity College,
Cambridge
. Like several other notable musicians,
including
Yo-Yo Ma and
Ariana Ghez, Liu valued the balance of also
having a strong education outside of music, and read physics during
his time at Cambridge, where he studied under
Brian Josephson.
He has toured widely,
performing in several countries, including Canada
, China
, England
, Japan
, and the
United
States
. He has also given invited lectures at
several universities on such topics as the influence of
Richard Wagner on
German culture.
