Richard Gary Bowness (born on January 25, 1955 in Monctonmarker, New Brunswickmarker) is a Canadianmarker former National Hockey League right winger and currently an assistant coach with the Vancouver Canucks. He played for the Atlanta Flames, Detroit Red Wings, St. Louis Blues and Winnipeg Jets and Central Hockey League, AHL and QMJHL teams. He has been a head coach for the Winnipeg Jets, Boston Bruins, Ottawa Senators, New York Islanders and Phoenix Coyotes.

Rick Bowness, while assistant coach of the Winnipeg Jets, was once fined $500 and suspended for three games after punching Calgary forward Tim Hunter in the head during a brawl. Brian Hayward and Tim Hunter had been involved in a scuffle which escalated to a full brawl after Hunter continued to attack Hayward. [68706]

He was drafted by the Atlanta Flames in the 1975 NHL Entry Draft, Second Round, Twenty-sixth Overall.

In July 2006, he vacated his post as assistant coach at Phoenix to become an assistant coach to Alain Vigneault at Vancouver.


Rick Bowness' son, Rick Bowness Jr., is currently the Marketing & Communications Manager of the Saint John Sea Dogs. His second son Ryan was drafted by the Columbus Blue Jackets in the 2001 NHL entry draft and is currently playing in the ECHL for the Ontario Reign. His daughter, Kristen, recently graduated from the University of Arizona in December 2008.
