The
Roman Catholic Diocese of Gaylord is an
ecclesiastical territory or
diocese of the
Roman Catholic Church in the
Northern Michigan region of the
United States.
It comprises the twenty-one most northern
counties of the lower peninsula of the state, and includes the
cities of Traverse
City
, Alpena
, Manistee
and Petoskey
. The prelate is
Bishop Patrick Cooney, who serves as pastor of the Mother
Church, the Cathedral of Saint Mary of Mount Carmel in Gaylord
.
The Diocese of Gaylord was created on December 19, 1970 and
canonically erected on July 20, 1971 by
Pope Paul VI.
On October 7, 2009, it was announced that Monsignor
Bernard Hebda has been appointed Bishop of
Gaylord by
Pope Benedict XVI,
though no dates have yet be set for his ordination or
installation.
