Roy Carter, Principal
Oboe of
the
Northern Sinfonia, began
playing the oboe at the age of 10.
He won scholarships to study with Margaret
Eliot at the Royal Academy of Music
and later under Terence McDonough at the Royal College of
Music
.
His orchestral career began with the
Philharmonia Orchestra and then the
English National Opera
Orchestra. He joined the
London Symphony Orchestra as
Co-Principal Oboe in 1986 and was appointed to Principal Oboe in
1988, staying for twenty years before deciding to move to the
Northern Sinfonia in late
2005.
As a freelance player, Roy Carter has appeared as Principal Oboe
with most of Britain's major orchestras, including the London
Philharmonic, the Royal Philharmonic and the
English Chamber Orchestra.
He plays a
Howarth XL Oboe.
