SM Cubao or
SM Department Store
Cubao is a mall-based department store owned by
SM Prime Holdings. SM Cubao is third of
the
SM Department Store chain
owned and developed by
Henry Sy, Sr..
It is
located at the Araneta
Center
Cubao District of Quezon City
. Currently SM Cubao is undergoing a major
renovation in which it will feature SM Supermarket, the currently
renovating SM Department Store, Surplus Shop, Ace Hardware, The
newly revitalized SM Appliance Center, Toy Kingdom Express and
several food and retail stalls and outlets.
History
After
Henry Sy's succession of his expansion of the department store
business in the Makati City (formerly part of Rizal province), he
built a fully-air conditioned department store in the fast growing
Cubao district which is now Araneta Center Cubao. During the early
2000s, the outlet was losing it's attraction due to it's dirty
floor tiles, walls and bad odor. So SM renovated and expanded the
outlet by adding a multi-level carpark for parking spaces. As part
of the Araneta Center's Major Redevelopment Plan, They have
constructed a bridge in SM Cubao, providing direct mall access to
its neighbor shopping mall,
Ali Mall.
Buildings
Main building
The main building is the first building of SM Cubao. Today, the
inside of the main building currently undergoing a major renovation
and will feature surprise anchor tenants like the SM Supermarket,
Toy Kingdom, Ace Hardware (which is now located at the 3rd floor)
and a newly renovated SM Department Store.
Carpark building
The Carpark building is currently undergoing construction as part
of the Araneta Center master plan. The building is open for parking
space. This building will house other tenants of SM Cubao
