Salim T S Al-Hassani is an acknowledged world expert in the decommissioning of offshore installations and in major plant-related accident investigations. He served as an expert witness in the inquiry into the Piper Alphamarker oil rig disaster (1988).


He was born in Iraq, but has lived in Manchestermarker since the early 60's.


In September 2009, Professor Salim T S Al-Hassani was granted a Fellowship of the British Association for the Advancement of Science, now the British ScienceAssociation for his work to promote the scientific and technologicalachievements within Muslim cultures.

The Honorary Fellowship of the British Science Association is a distinguished honour, conferred to date on just 81 people.

In February 2009, Professor Salim T S Al-Hassani was presented the Building Bridges Award by the Association of Muslim Social Scientists.

In 2001, Professor Salim T S Al-Hassani received the Fazlur Rahman Khan award for excellence in engineering, science and technology.

Current Position

Salim T S Al-Hassani is an Emeritus Professor Mechanical Engineering and an Honorary Professorial Fellow at the School of Languages, Linguistics and Cultures, Faculty of Humanities, University of Manchestermarker.


Since 1968, Professor Al-Hassani, has published over 200 papers in international journals and books. He has supervised 40 PhD, 50 MSc students and numerous post-doctoral Fellows from all parts of the world. He had received numerous awards and holds patents on engineering.

Work on Muslim Heritage

Salim T S Al-Hassani's special interest is the history of Muslim Civilisation where he has made his mark in the application of applied modern engineering analysis to the machines of Al-Jazari and Taqi al-Din, recreating their work in 3D.

He is Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Foundation for Science Technology and Civilisation, publisher of, ([588740]) and founder of the 1001 Inventions ([588741]) global education initiative.

He is a highly recognised international speaker on the Muslim contribution to building the foundations of modern civilisation delivering more than 150 lectures and is Chief Editor of more than 300 publications on Muslim Heritage including the best selling book, 1001 Inventions: Discover the Muslim Heritage in our World.

The 1001 Inventions book is considered to be essential reading for all Muslims especially Muslim youth in order to change wrong perceptions about the role of Muslim inventions in today’s schools, universities, homes, hospitals, market, cities, world and universe.
