Sebastian Boenisch (born 1 February 1987 in Gliwicemarker) is a Germanmarker footballer who plays for Werder Bremen, mainly as a left back.

Career

Boenisch made his professional debut for Schalke 04 on 11 February 2006. He was substituted on in the 86th minute, in a 7–4 home win against Bayer Leverkusen. His only other appearance that season was in a 2–1 win against RCD Espanyol in the UEFA Cup.

International Career

He also made his under-21 international debut that year. The Polish-born player hesitated whether to cap for his native country, or Germany, saying on 8 June 2009: "I have always wanted to play for Poland, I talked about it before Euro 2008. But I am not interested in playing for Poland B, or the youth team." Therefore, in June 2009, Polish coach Leo Beenhakker decided to add him to Polish lineup for the 12 August friendly match vs. Greece. In the meantime however, Boenisch changed his mind and said that he was not interested in capping for Poland anymore, and was concentrating on playing for the German U-21 team.In November 2009 Polands new national football team coach Franciszek Smuda faileded to convince Boenisch to commit to play for Poland within a narrow time frame.[587416] However, press reports in Poland quote Smuda that Boenisch promised him to join the Polish national team in the future if called up.
