Story

Transcribed from the Section Z arcade game brochure'

In the year 2XXX, the "Balangool" Empire rampages through space at will and invades one planet after another. The evil hands are finally reaching towards the planet earth. You are a lonely astronaut in space. You must penetrate the enemy base which is divided into sections from A to Z and must destroy the "L-Brain" in the final target section Z. Urgent order!! Destroy the secret base of the Balangool empire! Can you carry out this vital mission?

NES version

The NES version of Section Z features several changes from the original arcade game. The NES version lacks the two-player alternating from the arcade game, but adds the branching paths that allows the player to choose more than one route, as well as longer levels (in contrast to the arcade game's linear path of 26 sections). The instruction manual for the English localization of the NES version identified the nameless astronaut in the game as Captain Commando, a character who appeared on the rear packaging of Capcom's early NES games.
