Shawbury is a village and civil parish in the Englishmarker county of Shropshiremarker, Englandmarker. The village is 8.4 miles north east of the town of Shrewsburymarker, 11.5 miles north west of Telfordmarker and 163 miles north west of Londonmarker. The village straddles the A53 between Shrewsbury and Market Draytonmarker. The nearest railway station is at Yortonmarker on the Welsh Marches Line for Shrewsbury/Crewemarker.

History

Shawbury has an entry in the Domesday Book of 1085. In the great book Shawbury is recorded by the name Sawesberie. The main landholders was Gerard from Earl Roger. The survey also mentions that there is church and a mill.

The parish church of Saint Mary the Virgin

There has been a church on this site since at least the 12th century. Although the present church is not from that date.

Village Facts

The village is home to RAF Shawburymarker, a helicopter base for the Royal Air Force of the United Kingdommarker. The River Rodenmarker flows through the village. The village of Moreton Corbetmarker, with its castlemarker, is just to the north. Shawbury's football club is Shawbury United FCmarker.
