The Sierra Pelona Mountains, also known as the Sierra Pelona Range, are a rocky transverse range in Southern California. The mountains extend from Interstate 5 at Gormanmarker, to the Antelope Valley Freeway at Vincentmarker. The Sierra Pelona Mountains are bordered by San Gabriel Mountainsmarker to the south, Santa Clarita Valleymarker to the southwest, San Emigdio Mountainsmarker to the northwest and the Antelope Valleymarker to the north and northeast. The San Andreas Faultmarker lie north of the mountains, in Elizabeth Lakemarker. Tejon Passmarker is a mountain pass that separates the mountains of Sierra Pelonas, San Emigdios, and the Tehachapis, near Gorman and Lebecmarker. The Sierra Pelona Mountains are shared by Kern (southern) and Los Angeles (northwest) Counties. The Sierra Pelona Mountains are often considered to be part of the San Gabriel Mountainsmarker, but the two are separated by the Soledad Canyon to the south that connects the Santa Clarita and Antelope valleys. Snow is frequent in the high areas of Sierra Pelonas during the winters, but these areas are also prone to wildfires in the summer and fall, during which the Santa Ana winds occur.
