Skellefteå AIK Hockey (SAIK)
is a Swedish
professional
ice hockey club from Skellefteå
, playing in the Swedish elite league Elitserien.
History
SAIK was founded in 1921, although hockey was not played until
1943, with only training matches being played the first season. In
season 1943-44 the club played in the local league
Skellefteserien, which could not be finished due to
unsuitable hockey weather as the games were played outdoors. In
1985 the club's hockey organization was detached and a pure hockey
club with the name Skellefteå AIK Hockey was formed.
1955 SAIK qualified for the highest league in Sweden. Season
1957-58 the club won the then
Allsvenskan's northern group
and later finished second in
SM-serien only one point
behind the winner
Djurgårdens
IF Hockey. SAIK then played in Division 1 North until 1967. The
club had difficulties qualifying for continued play in the Division
1 series but in 1975 the series was won and SAIK later finished
fourth placed in SM-serien. When the Swedish elite league under the
name
Elitserien was formed in 1975 SAIK
was one of the teams to play in it. In 1978 SAIK won the playoffs,
becoming Swedish champions, and in 1981 SAIK won the regular season
series.
In 1989 SAIK was degraded but after 16 seasons of play in the
Swedish second league (Allsvenskan) SAIK again qualified for the
highest series and has played in Elitserien since season
2006-07.
