Soundwave is an annual music festival held in major cities around Australia. The festival originated in Perth, Western Australiamarker and began traveling to the other Australian capital cities in 2007. It features an increasing number of international and Australian music acts, from various genres including metal, hardcore, punk rock, acoustic rock, pop punk and alternative rock. The festival has been headlined by Good Charlotte, Deftones, The Offspring and Nine Inch Nails and co-headlined by +44, Incubus, Alice in Chains, Bloodhound Gang and Lamb of God.

The festival will return in February 2010. Some acts were announced prior to the official statement, with Faith No More eventually being confirmed as the headline act and My Chemical Romance co-headlining.

Established as Gravity Soundwave

The Soundwave festival originated in Perth, as a smaller festival known as Gravity Soundwave within the Gravity Games. The Gravity Games were held in South Perth along the Swan Rivermarker, being based mainly on water-based and action sports. The event was sponsored by Vodafone in its first year, with the company reportedly committing one million dollars to the event. Gravity Soundwave provided the music side of the festival, which took place at McCallum Park alongside the Swan River.

Gravity Soundwave was first introduced in the festival's first year, which was held on 14 and 15 October 2004. American pop punk band Good Charlotte effectively became the first headline act of Soundwave, when they performed in the festival's first night. The following night featured Unwritten Law, Regurgitator, MxPx, Lagwagon and Last Year's Hero.

The 2005 festival was again presented by Vodafone, being held on the night of 8 October. Gravity Soundwave was headlined by Grinspoon, with it also featuring American acts Unwritten Law, Reel Big Fish, and Goldfinger.

The third and final year of the Gravity Games festival in Perth was moved to December 2006, instead of October. Gravity Soundwave featured American act Aiden, local Australian bands Gyroscope, Kisschasy, Parkway Drive, The Getaway Plan and New Zealanders Goodnight Nurse.

2007

In 2007 the festival expanded to include Sydneymarker and Brisbanemarker, and increased the number of bands performing. A number of the artists featured in the 2007 Festival had previously played at the Soundwave festival in Perth, including Unwritten Law, MxPx and Parkway Drive.

2008

The 2008 Soundwave festival was expanded to include dates in five states of Australia with the addition of dates in Melbournemarker and Adelaidemarker. The expanded Festival featured five stages compared to three the previous year.

The Festival's organisers received criticism from some attendees due to an apparent lack of organisation in Brisbane and Sydney, due to a large increase in the number of attendees, some queueing for up to two hours to enter in heat up to 40 degrees Celsius. By the Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth festivals organisers rectified planning issues experienced in the first two Festivals.

All cancelled acts were replaced with the exception of The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus.

2009

55 international bands were confirmed to take part in the 2009 installment of the Soundwave festival, as announced on 24 September 2008. The 2009 festival expanded to six stages due to the extra bands playing this year.

The festival was headlined by American industrial rock band Nine Inch Nails, with other co-headlining acts including Alice in Chains, Bloodhound Gang and Lamb of God. A second round of announcements in November 2008 confirmed additional acts would include The Dillinger Escape Plan (replaced Scars on Broadway), Jack's Mannequin, Underoath, Forever the Sickest Kids and All That Remains.

Organisers originally had difficulty confirming a venue for the Sydney show in 2009, causing concerns that the show would be cancelled. However in January 2009, the venue was belatedly confirmed to be Eastern Creek Racewaymarker, which would remove noise restrictions and curfews previously placed on the event when held in previous venues - such as 2008's Sydney Parkmarker. The absence of a curfew enabled an extension of the event's running time; in turn, allowing the Sydney show to exclusively showcase additional acts. These include International Superheroes of Hardcore (New Found Glory side-project) and Mike Herrera of MxPx performing acoustic songs from his side-project Tumbledown and also MxPx.

It was announced that the presenters of the United Kingdom's reality stunt television show Dirty Sanchez and Finnishmarker stuntmen The Dudesons would be masters of ceremonies at Soundwave 2009.

The performers for Soundwave 2010 were announced on 13 August 2009. The festival will be headlined by American rock bands Faith No More, My Chemical Romance and Jane's Addiction. The events will take place as per usual, in late February and early March - at the same locations as 2009. Glassjaw were the last band announced in November 2009, with This Is Hell being the replacement to Maximum the Hormone, who cancelled due to their drummer being unfit to play.
