South Lakeland is a local government district in Cumbriamarker, England. Its council is based in Kendalmarker. It includes much of the Lake Districtmarker.

The district was created on 1 April 1974 under the Local Government Act 1972. It was formed from the Kendalmarker borough, Windermeremarker urban district, most of Lakesmarker urban district, South Westmorland Rural Districtmarker, from Westmorlandmarker, Grangemarker and Ulverstonmarker urban districts and North Lonsdale Rural Districtmarker from Lancashiremarker, and Sedbergh Rural Districtmarker from the West Riding of Yorkshire.

Local government

The district council as of 2008 is currently governed by the Liberal Democrats with the Conservative party and the Labour party in opposition.
