Summary

Stakeout is about Seattlemarker detectives Chris Lecce (Richard Dreyfuss) and Bill Reimers (Emilio Estevez). The duo are assigned to the night shift on a stake-out on Latina waitress Maria Maguire (Madeleine Stowe). Maria's former boyfriend Richard 'Stick' Montgomery (Aidan Quinn) has escaped from a prison following a brawl with several guards. Soon Montgomery telephones Maria. He has a large amount of money that he secretly hid in an armchair prior to his incarceration. Enter the buddy cop team of Lecce and Reimers who spy on Maria hoping Montgomery will turn up at her door so they can arrest him. Fate takes a turn for the worse as Lecce falls in love with Maria and the Seattle police suspect him as one of Montgomery's Allies. The climax is a typical (1980s) action-packed chase which ultimately ends with Lecce and Maria getting together.

Trivia

  • Early in the film, Reimers (Estevez) and Lecce (Dreyfuss) are playing a guessing game. Reimers asks Lecce to identify the film containing the quote: "This was no boating accident." Lecce says, "I don't know." The quote was spoken by Dreyfuss's character in the film Jaws.
