"
Stronger" is the third
single from
pop
singer
Britney Spears released from
the
album Oops!... I Did It Again during the
fourth quarter of
2000.
The song was written and produced by frequent collaborators
Max Martin and
Rami in 1999. In this
anthem, Spears sings about overcoming the
difficulties of love as she proclaims she is "stronger than
yesterday". There is an allusion to "...Baby One More Time":
"...my loneliness ain't killing me no more".
Music video
The music
video was filmed from October 5 to October 7, 2000, at Van Nuys
Airport
, Los Angeles, California
, and was directed by Joseph
Kahn. Spears pitched the original concept to Kahn, which
included breaking up with her boyfriend, driving a car and a chair
sequence. Kahn explained that the first thing that came to his mind
was the chair sequence in
Janet
Jackson's “
The
Pleasure Principle”. Kahn further remarked the change of style
from her previous music videos, saying,
"I think this video is interesting because it's got a
very sophisticated, adult look to it. It's definitely a departure
from the sort of candy-colored videos she was doing before, so I
always thought this was the transition between Britney the teenage
pop star and Britney the sort of diva she became. [..] There's a
shot where I'm tracking with her, and her legs are spread, and
Larry [Rudolph], the manager, was
like, "Don't do that." And she was like, "Yes, definitely do
that."
The video begins with a closed caption that reads "Britney Spears –
Stronger", amidst the sound of a storm. It then cuts to a close up
of Spears looking at her boyfriend, who is smiling with another
woman holding him. She realizes she is better without him and walks
away. There is a shot of the tower they were in, in an apparent
semi-futuristic world. At the beginning of the first chorus, Spears
starts dancing with an
Emeco 1006 chair
in front of a black background. The second half of the video finds
Spears driving away from the party in a
classic Ford Mustang during a
thunderstorm; however, before long, her car goes into a spin out,
then stops on the very edge of the bridge. After recovering from
the shock of it, she's forced to continue walking on in the rain.
Cuts of her dancing with a cane, transformed from the chair, are
also included. The video ends with Britney walking across a
bridge.
Kahn insisted on Spears wearing gray eye shadow in the video, as it
made her eyes look like they were popping.
The are two versions of the video. In the original version, during
the beginning of the bridge, when Spears sings
Stronger than
yesterday she is seen standing on the edge of the back of the
chair as it spins. However, in later showings, this scene is cut
and replaced with a close-up of Spears singing the lyric. The later
is the version included on
Greatest Hits: My
Prerogative.
Joseph Kahn showed the chair in his home during an episode of
MTV's Cribs. The video was
featured on an episode of
MTV’s "
Making the Video." "Stronger" became yet
another music video to retire on MTV's
TRL.
