The United States Office of Management and Budget has defined 940 Core Based Statistical Areas (CBSAs) for the United States of America. The OMB defines a Core Based Statistical Area as one or more adjacent counties or county equivalents that have at least one urban core area of at least 10,000 population, plus adjacent territory that has a high degree of social and economic integration with the core as measured by commuting ties. The 940 Core Based Statistical Areas currently defined by the OMB include the 363 Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs), which have an urban core population of at least 50,000, and the 577 Micropolitan Statistical Areas (μSAs), which have an urban core population of at least 10,000 but less than 50,000.

1. The 940 Core Based Statistical Areas (CBSAs) currently defined by the United States Office of Management and Budget include the 363 Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs), which have an urban core population of 50,000 or more, and the 577 Micropolitan Statistical Areas (μSAs), which have an urban core population of 10,000 or more but less than 50,000.
2. The United States Office of Management and Budget defines a Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) as a Core Based Statistical Area having at least one urbanized area of 50,000 or more population, plus adjacent territory that has a high degree of social and economic integration with the core as measured by commuting ties.
3. The United States Office of Management and Budget defines a Micropolitan Statistical Area (μSA) as a Core Based Statistical Area having at least one urban cluster of at least 10,000 but less than 50,000 population, plus adjacent territory that has a high degree of social and economic integration with the core as measured by commuting ties.
4. The United States Office of Management and Budget defines a Combined Statistical Area (CSA) as an aggregate of adjacent Core Based Statistical Areas (CBSAs) that are linked by commuting ties.
