The 717 primary census statistical areas of the United States include all 124 Combined Statistical Area (CSAs), plus 185 Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSAs) and 408 Micropolitan Statistical Area (μSAs) that are not a component of a CSA.

Major Points

• The US population is 308 million. [444142] This means that 50% of the US population lives in a PCSA that is at least as populous as the San Antonio, TX MSA. Note that the San Antonio MSA is the 29th largest PCSA with a population of 2.03 million.

• Roughly 157 million Americans live in PCSAs with a population of at least 2 million.

• Roughly 191 million Americans live in PCSAs with a population of at least 1 million.

• The 11 largest PCSAs have a combined population over 100 million. The 11th largest PCSA is Miami-Fort Lauderdale-Pompano Beach, FL MSA, which has a population of 5.41 million.

• The 66 largest PCSAs have a combined population over 200 million. The 66th largest PCSA is El Paso, TX MSA which has approximately 742,000 people.

• Of the 717 PCSAs, the median most populous PCSA (i.e. the 359th largest PCSA) is Fort Polk South-De Ridder, LA CSA, which has roughly 80,600 people.

• Note that the total population of all 717 PCSAs is only about 285 million and does not encompass the entire 308 million US population. The largest PCSA is New York-Newark-Bridgeport, NY-NJ-CT-PA CSA with roughly 22.2 million people. The smallest of PCSAs is Pecos, TX µSA with roughly 11.1 thousand people.

1. A primary census statistical area is a census defined metropolitan region that is not a component of another census defined metropolitan region. In the United States, the 717 primary census statistical areas currently defined by the United States Census Bureau include all 124 Combined Statistical Areas (CSAs) and the 593 Core Based Statistical Areas (CBSAs) that are not a component of a Combined Statistical Area. The Census Bureau defines a Combined Statistical Area as an aggregate of adjacent Core Based Statistical Areas that are linked by commuting ties. The 940 Core Based Statistical Areas currently defined by the Census Bureau include the 363 Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs), which have an urban core population of 50,000 or more, and the 577 Micropolitan Statistical Areas (μSAs), which have an urban core population of 10,000 or more but less than 50,000.
2. The United States Census Bureau defines a Combined Statistical Area (CSA) as an aggregate of adjacent Core Based Statistical Areas that are linked by commuting ties.
3. The United States Census Bureau defines a Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) as a Core Based Statistical Area having at least one urbanized area of 50,000 or more population, plus adjacent territory that has a high degree of social and economic integration with the core as measured by commuting ties.
4. The United States Census Bureau defines a Micropolitan Statistical Area (μSA) as a Core Based Statistical Area having at least one urban cluster of at least 10,000 but less than 50,000 population, plus adjacent territory that has a high degree of social and economic integration with the core as measured by commuting ties.
