Tairua, Coromandel Peninsula
The town of Tairua is on the east coast of the Coromandel Peninsulamarker in the North Islandmarker of New Zealandmarker. It lies at the mouth of the Tairua Rivermarker on its north bank and on the small Paku Peninsula. The population was 1,269 in the 2006 Census, a decrease of 192 from 2001.

As well as the safe sandy harbour which is ideal for families, there is also a first rate surf beach in Tairua.

Tairua has long been a popular vacation choice with Kiwi and is now becoming increasingly visited by international tourists.

There are several motels in Tairua along with a local radio station.

Directly opposite Tairua on the south bank of the river's estuary is the smaller settlement of Pauanuimarker. The two settlements are 30 kilometres east of Thamesmarker although the town has closer connections with the sea side resort town Whangamatamarker. Several islands lie off the mouth of the river, notably Slipper Islandmarker to the southeast and the Alderman Islandsmarker 20 kilometres to the east.

The area is a popular holiday destination noted for game fishing, diving, and surfing.

Education

Tairua Schoolmarker is a coeducational full primary (years 1-8) school with a decile rating of 7 and a roll of 102.
