Tambaram is a suburb of Chennai situated 27 km south of the city in Tamil Nadu, India. This is an urban node. It has an average elevation of 32 metres (104 feet). Tambaram is a hub to all major destinations in south Tamil Nadu as it lies on the busy Chennai–Trichy national highway. The highway and the railway line from Chennai Egmore to Kanyakumari divide the town into East Tambaram and West Tambaram. The Chennai suburban railway network operates a suburban railway service from Chennai Beach to Tambaram.

Tambaram is considered to be a satellite town as it caters to the needs of hundreds of villages and suburbs like Padappai, Selaiyur, Agaram, Madambakkam, Mudichur and Mannivakkam. Tambaram is geographically divided into West, East and Tambaram Sanatorium. East Tambaram is well known for education since there are a lot of educational institutions present there. The prominent among them is the Madras Christian College.

History

Tambaram has its origins in a village of the same name which lay on the outskirts of Chennai city. The T. B. Sanatorium in Tambaram is one of the oldest institutions of the kind in India . In 1936-1937, the Madras Christian College campus was moved to Tambaram heralding development and accelerating the process of inclusion of Tambaram in Madras city.

The Municipality

Prior to 1964, Tambaram was a small panchayat. In 1964 it was constituted as a Grade III Municipality comprising the Village Panchayats of Pulikoradu, Irumbliyur and Selaiyur. Due to rapid development and growth of the town commercially and residentially, the Municipality is now classified as a 'Selection Grade Municipality'. The population as per 2001 census is 1,33,667 besides a floating population of more than 1 lakh per day. The extent of the municipality is 20.72 km².

The revenue villages under this municipality are Kadapperi, Pulikoradu, Irumbuliyu, and Selaiyur. The number of households is 26,333, the number of notified slums is 17 and the number of unnotified slums is 7[118865].

The most famous road in West Tambaram is the Shanmugam Road which is one of the busiest roads in the city. It is comparable to the Ranganathan Street in T. Nagar. The eastern part of the road is the commercial centre while the western end is called the Medical centre. Tambaram has famous hospitals and diagnostic centres like Hindu Mission Hospital, Deepam Hospital, Philips Hospital, AG Hospital etc,. It had three theatres called MR on the main road, National slightly off the main road till 1972, and the biggest of the three named Vidhya.

Recent developments

Recently Southern Railway is planning a new terminal at Tambaram Railway Station, apart from Chennai Central and Egmore, in view of the rapid growth of the south broad gauge section, which essentially means Chennai Beach-Tambaram-Chengalpattu-Tiruchirapalli and beyond. As a first step towards this, Southern Railway plans to set up a coaching terminal at Tambaram at an approximate cost of Rs.34 crore. It will have pit lines for maintenance, stabling lines and additional platforms[118866].

A combined court complex was inaugurated near GST road opposite to MEPZ. This complex has both the Munsiff and Sessions court within the same building, thus the Magistrate court at East Tambaram and Munsiff court at West Tambaram is now under a single building. Mr. N. Ramesh is the District Munsif. Mr. Murugesan is the Judicial Magistrate. A new flyover is under construction and is expected to be opened after 20 months. [118867]

Demographics

As of the 2001 Indian census, Tambaram had a population of 137,609. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Tambaram has an average literacy rate of 78%, higher than the national average of 65%: male literacy is 82%, and female literacy is 74%. In Tambaram, 10% of the population is under 6 years of age.

The number of people below the poverty line is 9,171.

Literacy Rate

Tambaram town has been recorded with a literacy rate of 82% in the year 2001 and this has increased from 75% in the year 1991. Among the literate population, nearly 52% are male literates and the remaining 48% are female literates as per the 2001 census. Occupational Pattern

The working population constitutes 55 % of the total population and the majority of them are engaged in Business & Industrial activities i.e. 62% in Industrial and Business related activities. The Secondary Sector is the second important activity and nearly 25% of the total workers are engaged in business and related allied activities. Only 20% of the total workers are engaged in the Primary Sector, especially in Tea Plantations and Agriculture activities[118868].

Topography

Tambaram Railway Station divides Tambaram into East Tambaram and West Tambaram. East Tambaram (Selaiyur) and West Tambaram each have a police station.

Taluk Legal Services Authority, to render free legal services to the poor & needy and also to create legal awareness, is functioning at the Tambaram Civil Court. The Civil Court Judge is the Chairman of the Taluk Legal Services Authority. At present, Mr. N. Ramesh is the District Munsif at Tambaram who is rendering good legal service to the poor.

Politics

After the completion of recent delimitation exercise by the Election Commission of India,the Tambaram assembly constituency consists of Kadaperi, Tiruvancheri, Mudichur, Kasbapuram, Vengapakkam, Agaramthen, Kovilancheri, Madurapakkam and Moolacheri villages in Tambaram (Municipality), Chitlapakkam (Town Panchayat), Sembakkam (Town Panchayat), Madambakkam (Town Panchayat), Perungalathur (Town Panchayat) and Peerkankaranai (Town Panchayat). Tambaram is now included in the Sriperumbudur Parliamentary constituency after the recent delimitation exercise by the Election Commission of India previously it was under South Chennai constituency.[118870]
