Thomas A. Edison High School is a high school in Alexandria, Virginiamarker, administered by Fairfax County Public Schoolsmarker.

In the 1990s, the school's debate and forensics teams gained widespread recognition. The Policy Debate Team won the Harvardmarker Tournament (1995), the Glenbrooks (1995), and two Virginia High School State Tournaments (1995 and 1996). Its academic team has appeared on the local television quizbowl game show "It's Academic".

Edison's graduates have typically moved on to attend local and state colleges and universities, such as Virginia Techmarker, the University of Virginiamarker, The College of William and Marymarker, George Mason Universitymarker, Virginia Commonwealth Universitymarker, James Madison Universitymarker, West Virginia Universitymarker and Northern Virginia Community College.

Demographics

In 2007-2008, Edison's student body was 37% White; 21% Black; 25% Hispanic; 12% Asian, and 5% Other.

Test scores

Edison High School is a fully accredited high school based on the SOL tests in Virginia. The average SAT score in 2006 for Edison was a 1494 (502 in Critical Reading, 505 in Math, and 487 in Writing).

Edison Academy

The Edison Academy acts as a school within a school. Upperclassmen can enroll in Academy courses to gain knowledge and skills in specific careers they want to seek after graduation. Courses offered range from cosmetology to automobile maintenance. Some programs offer students technical certification and job placement upon graduation. Edison is one of the few schools in Fairfax County to offer these programs.

International Baccalaureate

Edison offers the International Baccalaureate program for its advanced students. The IB program offers high school students the ability to take college level courses. Specifically with a more global perspective. Edison uses the IB program for the majority of its advanced courses, in lieu of Advanced Placement or Honors courses. Edison is one of the few schools in Fairfax County to offer this program.
